@evreyone

does anybody knows if the development of KoPi is still running?
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=112604]http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.p...ckage_id=112604

There is no movement since 2005-10-29

It would be sad if my assumption is right.

The same question about qpegps
http://sourceforge.net/projects/qpegps/]http://sourceforge.net/projects/qpegps

nothing since 2006-02-02

Who knows it?

These are the things that make me miss a commercial (non-linux, non-user-maintained, non-test-and-error,...) ROM/Distro for non-developers, for just USERS, that want to use and hence, need a gadget that has everything, and that it just works. That simple thing, can't be achieved today just with a Windows PDA.

A PIM (25% of KO/PI is by far, enough) syncable with oultook without headaches, a MP3 player (not necessary video player), A fast PDF/.DOC Viewer capable of show 100% adobe files, and a Web browser able to surf more than the 60% of websites, and an app that when double-clicked, shows a list of available wifi-networks, and connects to the one that you double-click... ¿is this that difficult?

My former nokia 770 lacked the "serious", or the "all but internet" part. The Zaurus SL-C3200 is somewhat in the middle of nothing. You can't just sit in a Cafe and search for available nets and connect to the best received with just one click, nor open whatever PDF (handwritten ones, in my case), nor open whichever XLS file, nor check my on-line banking needs, because their websites aren't supported by my web surfing app (yes, this is the way... make compatible the less important thing, that is, the web surfer, not the site).

The Calendar can't wake you up, and if you want a good alarm, install KO/PI (the pure example of how something so-configurable, can be just useless because of this main reason).

I once tried OZ (last month or so), Opie flavour, and it didn't even suspend when I closed the 3200,  (edit what file? that is not usability) or I was almost able to unmount the internal hard drive (what for?). The music player didn't react to my orders when I tried to lower the volume. Not to metion the user interface of the player...

Bugtrackers? Cacko and OZ are plenty of tracked bugs. I follow cacko mostly, and there's no movement at all. With my previous comments about OZ, it looks like nobody moves in the user interface area.

The only compilation I want to see are my elasticity theory and fluid mechanics books. And the only developing I want to do is the one related to my work, not something that I need to press to check my e-mail.

Does someone see the light at the end of the tunnel? Please, share it here, so I could improve my user experience with my zaurus.

Thanks!.

Currently, I'm working on some modifications on qpeGPS (mainly support to tiled maps). I think that in 4-6 weeks I will release a new version.

If you have a new feature or bug to be corrected post it, and I will look if I can solve it.

KO/PI: Well, someone could just grab the sources and continue the development.
I would do so immediately, if I were a good enough developer.

Zautrix was working on Outlook sync heavily, and he even said it was in a state where he tested it already. Should be out at beginning of 2006.
This would be a killer application!

However, the current sources on sourceforge (2.2.7) don't contain that code yet...

Hrw:
This project is not only QTopia-related. It is QT based and thus runs on many platforms, also without QTopia. I run it successfully (and very nicely, stable and fast BTW, even faster than on QTopia) on a pdaXrom 1.1.0beta3 setup.
If I were not boud to Outlook at work, I would also use it for work on Windows PCs.

We'll see. Maybe I'll download the sources of 2.2.7 some day and at least make some smaller optimizations.
That is also the way I began to develop on Mindmap/LX for the old HP 200LX. And in the end I had developed about half of the entire application. :-)
Modifying is always much easier than writing from scratch. At least for me, a not very experienced hobby programmer.

Yes, you are right.
QTopia is too special to be supported by a broad range of developers. And many opensource projects are short-lived, because the developer abandons it once he loses interest or time.
And such special projects are most probably NOT continued by anyone else.

I guess zautrix should have thought of that before pissing off a lot of upstream projects by forking them and sticking /PI behind the name.

I wish I could code, because I would love to contribute to Zautrix's work. Unfortunately, I can't. I had offered to help with the documentation since I'm a technical writer, but life happened and I have not had much time tor anything. (What is it about buying a house that sucks all available time away?)

I love my Zaurus 6k, but it is discouraging to see so many great apps abandoned.

I used to feel the same way about my SL-5500 3 years back.  This was before Zautrix came out with the PI stuff and pdaXrom was barely coming out.  I shelved the linux pda for about a year and a half and when I came back I noticed a whole facelift for the sharp line.  Development for some programs continued however I noticed better ones came out too.  I have a feeling this will happen again within a year or two.  Shoot with pdaXrom and OpenZaurus it looks like depending on development with small programs will be null do to being able to compile well known programs like gimp and abiword.

What's wrong with the current KO/PI? Besides having a direct sync with outlook...  IMHO Outlook sucks with task management and calendar interfaces.  That's why I don't use it anymore.  I guess it would be nice to use an exchange plugin with the winbloze version of KO/PI.

ztep: are you also looking at migrating the client interface to the new 2.3x gpsd? I was looking into that and almost had it working, but I am not very skilled at pulling appart c++ code yet. The one problem I ran into was that the date format seems to have changed so the client could not recieve the "correct" time to verify the link. I could not seem to find the part of the code that actually parsed the date string to fix it tho

Kopi stores calender info in ics files. You can sync with local files. There should be some tool for syncing outlook with ics data -- or use the desktop versions of kopi or sunbird or lightning 4 thunderbird or ... With a few exception it works well I'd say.

In my opinion development gets a shot in the arm with every new Zaurus.  We haven't seen a new zaurus for a while so this lull is kind of expected.

Zautrix did a fine job of giving the community a very functional set of applications even if they were derived from other projects (kde, opie mail....).  I wish I had the talent to pickup the work that zautrix and anton (cacko rom) left off or help the OZ team with their continued efforts.
I'm now an iphone user and use my zaurii as serial terminals, perl and shell scripting and when I need 640x480 screens

I hope zautrix is still working on the KOPI projects, but right now, there don't appear to be many (if any) bugs in these products - they are a few things I would like to see the products also do (including Outlook syncing), but as they stand they work fine.  No new model of Z has broken the apps, so a new version is not needed - I hope people aren't assuming a developer has stopped working on a product simply because they've produced a very stable and feature rish app that does not need constant updates...

Having said that, zautrix has been very quiet of late.
