I'm Planning On Using Pdaxrom
« on: October 29, 2006, 07:55:22 pm »
I'm a Cacko user and haven't tried pdaXrom before.  I'd like to start using it.  I know how to flash my ROM but is there anything I should know as being a Cacko user.

Sharp Zaurus SL-C1000 with Netgear Wifi card.

For 1 change your avatar back!  :-)

No... I dont know about the Netgear card...
But I would say start off with beta3... I suggest users using pdaxrom for the first time to use one of the "more" stable releases so you are not turned off from the first impression...

Any questions you have feel free to post... but please do a quick search prior to posting... just saying this to save you a headache... :-)

Beta 3 doesn't come with U-Boot.  Would I need that?

This will be extremely obvious if you have read the documentation, but in order to get into the GUI you have to log in as root with no password and type "startx".

I believe that I had trouble with this the first time I installed pdaXrom (but that was my first experience with Linux EVER).

You don't need uBoot for Beta 3, only for Beta 4 and r121.

pdaXrom Beta 3 is installed.  I love it!  Its so much more responsive than Cacko.

Off I go to install some pdaXrom apps...

I'm going to make the switch to pdaXrom, but I'm waiting until February when I order a new second Z.
I wish to have Cacko on one and pdaXrom on the other.
I hope I can still find a C3100 when that time comes..

Sorry I cannot help you in the wifi card thing, but i would like to say a few words about pdaXrom in general.

pdaXrom is much closer to other desktop Linux distros than Sharp/Cacko. Almost all the apps for pdaXrom are directly (and can be relatively easily) compiled from the available sources. And they run smoothly (even for big guys like Firefox, GIMP and gumeric)!

The official feeds already have lots of packages. Yet don't forget to check out the contrib feeds and quite a feed individual feeds of some members here, including the "New Packages Announcement" thread. They have kept growing with tons of nice packages ready to use!

I'd say after using pdaXrom for more than a year, I find myself having much less frustration with lack of useful packages and with platform specific issues now than when I was using Sharp rom in the old days.

P.S. It's interesting to see more and more folks (I am one of them, hehe...) are going for having 2 Zs, one for real use and the other as a laboratory. My C1000 is now running Beta3 and feels quite rock solid, whereas my C860 (Beta1 -- or see my signature) has been awaiting quite a while for a more stable beta to test and to crash.

By that time the next Z model would have been announced.

Sorry for sounding a little noobish but there seems to be "little" documentation for pdaXrom.

I went through a lot of whats there on their site and on this forum.  I'm having trouble getting the feed to work.  I added the feed that I know is up but how can I get the list?

Also Gaim won't launch.

My wireless card and my USB mouse worked flawlessly.

loji's has been working on a very nice guide for beta3: http://www.thesounddesign.com/zaurus/beta3.htm

Meanie's page is a classic: http://www.users.on.net/~hluc/myZaurus/custom-pdaxrom.html
(pity to see "This page is discontinued ...")

For GAIM, try to launch it from the terminal and see what errors the app has.

Thanks so much for the links.  They seem to be very helpful.  The feeds still don't come through.  I have followed the instructions to fix the package manager.  But nothing, the log says it couldn't retrieve it.

Gaim seems to have had a problem with one of the lib files.  I'm not too concerned right now.

How do you set up the feeds in the package manager?
An alternative is to edit "ipkg.conf" and run "ipkg update" in the terminal. And then simply run "ipkg (-d DESTINATION PATH) install PACKAGE NAME" to install the desired package.

If your feed isn't working that is prolly the issue your having with Gaim... there are mutliple dependancies that need to tag along... and you prolly didnt install them, if you just pulled the single ipk from one of the feeds...

Ps. congrats on your first pdaxrom running setup...
