Create A New Sharprom Feed?
« on: November 27, 2006, 04:26:07 pm »
Hi,

I have setup Openembedded an built some packages for SharpROM compatible distros. I have tested under Cacko and stuff run fine. I am considering putting up a feed with all the binary package, but I'd like to find a place where the files will be kept for a VERY LONG time (sourceforge may not be approriate for a binary feed, or is it?).

Some examples of softwares:

- nano 1.3.9
- wpa_supplicant 0.4.8
- python 2.4.3 (with pyqt, ... Same as Mickey's feed)
- opie packages (opie-stumbler, opie-networksettings, ...)
- ...
and basically everything that can be built within Openembedded (well with gcc-2.95 limitations).

But before I spend too much time in this, are people interested in having another Sharprom feed?

I think it's a good thing to keep this movement alive. To my knowledge, there is still a fair amount of guys using SharpROM, Cacko, et. al.

A Really good idea.  Keeping up with what packages for ssharprom are current, available, working and compatable is a nightmare right now.

I gotta ask, though-- what happens if you try to make gpe, or even opie for 2.95?

Don't forget to put the sources and build instruction online as well. You could ask the linuxtogo.org dudes (#linuxtogo on freenode) about it.

Yes that's important:
1- It allows us to use your porting/compilation work and to improve it
2- It allows you to respect the terms of the GNU GPL, so that you won't be sued by any authors of the software you built. (more than 90% is licensed under the GPL)
(That's why I wanted to open a CVS/SVN repository for the Cacko distribution. I've sent a mail to Cacko's maintainer, but no answer yet :-(  )

Cheers,

Thanks all for the feedbacks.

I will consider linuxtogo.org and ask on IRC for the hosting.

Adf: yes! That's my motivation to put up this feed.

Koen: as for the sources and compilation instructions, that will be quite easy as I built everything with Openembedded. I just need to push a few patches (already sent one yesterday to build OPIE stuff and fix lsupc++ problem). Btw, let me thank you for the help and tips given (nick nicolasfr on irc). I really enjoy building stuff with OE now :!

Mickey: here are more informations about the hang I experienced while installing pyqt. http://www.geek-fr.com/blog/python_qt_wifi_and_the_zaurus
This was due to libqpe being installed in the dependencies and the zaurus really did not liked it! Seems libqpe built in OE is not compatible with libqpe installed on the zaurus...

Maslovsky is usually pretty quick in answering. Did you PM him?

BTW here are the links he sent me about a year ago....

Here is the source for my 1.23 ROMs (Full and Lite):

Cacko full 1.23

Cacko lite 1.23

Here is the source for the Cacko 2.4.20 kernel:

Cacko kernel 2.4.20

I'd help out a bit w/ a new Sharp Rom feed.

using OE can a cacko-based feed & kernel be built for the 6000?  There are a lot of sharprom 6000 users who'd really appreciate it, I bet

Sure, it just needs someone to add the necessary files. You might even find someone to fix all the .24-isms so you can have a 'cacko' with a 2.6 kernel. You could even call that 'skato'

very funny.  Actually I was thinking that for those who want sharprom on their 6k, and it is the 6k where this is the likeliest to happen,* the sharp setup is still pretty bad-- needs the kernel replaced (even 2.4) and a lot of additions to make it really  workable, imho.  Would be nice if at least the kernel/module upgrades and the software were available from a single feed--and reasonably up-to-date.

*(the wifi is still a little easier than opie, and much easier than gpe, but more importantly sharp has some minor video acceleration built in--if you look at lpotter's qtopia 2 rom he ended up reusing original pieces for just that reason)

Well I'm sure I'm not an expert     but I like Sharp Rom     and I'm involved in the same nightmare as many friends trying to find the appropiated Ipks. In fact often is a matter of luck, not to say a waste of time.

A new feed sounds cool!

I'm still jumping on my chair.

Thanks
