Yet Another "bricked" Story
« on: December 03, 2006, 09:58:21 pm »
I was trying to install pdaXrom and my Zaurus appears to be completly dead.  Screen is blank, the yellow charge light will not come on or blink.

It's a new Zaurus SL-C1000 from Japan.  The ROM was all in Japanese so I needed to make some sort of switch.  I was a good boy and backed up the Japanese ROM via the Diagnostic/Service menu (shutting down, pulling the battery, restarting while holding down D + M).  It worked fine.  I rebooted and it worked fine after the backup.  The backup file was on the CF.

Then I went to install the pdaXrom OS.  Here are the files that were on the main directory of the CF:

emergenc.img.md5sum
emergenc.img
uboot.bin
uboot.bin.md5sum
updater.pro
updater.sh

There were other files (including backup files) in other directories.  I went to the Flash/Update menu, selected option 3, typed 'Y' for what was supposed to be "Yes, I'm certain I want to do this," saw several files flash by on the screen, and then the screen went blank.  Of course I had the power supply plugged in and before all this the amber light was on to let me know this.  Once the screen went blank the amber battery/charge light went out.  I waited 5 minutes or so and nothing.  I tried pushing the on/off button.  Although I know it may have been a bad idea, I finally tried unplugging it and resetting it after 10 minutes of no response.

Any ideas what I can do other than use it for a doorstop or send it back to Sharp in Japan?

Once again... A Zaurus c700 (clam shell) to present *CANNOT* by easy means be bricked via software means...

Did you read all of the instructions prior to installing?

Pull battery and AC adapter... hold down OK.. while still depressing OK... plug in your AC adapter... keep holding OK for approximently 10 secs... you should start seeing the boot process...

Did you also download ROM data? the 45mb download? Let me know where you are at from here and I will continue later...

PS. Just a suggestion... since the current rom is in "REALLY beta" stage... I would suggest starting out with beta3. To install this it will require you to reload the original Sharp Rom NAND you backed up prior then loading the beta3 rom...

AFAIK all pxa based zaurus devices (not just c700) have a piece or ROM (real ROM, not flash) to recover stuff. You can only brick a collie by software.

Ok, the last post went through.  Sorry for posting in the General area instead of looking for an appropriate forum.  Do I feel like a noob!

I was following the instructions at https://www.oesf.org/index.php?title=Installing_pdaXrom for installing 1.1.0beta1 and 1.1.0beta3.  I'll try stepping back to the beta3 version.

Pulling the battery and AC adapter, reinserting the AC adapter w/OK pressed brought up a command line.  The rest looks like it would be a manual install from here.  Reinstalling the old Japanese ROM was easy enough (I DID manage to back it up before I got this far.)

I had managed to install Cacko earlier with no problems.  I like it, but I'm more interested in running the Zaurus like a mini laptop: access to my linuxbox at home, better aps like an earlier version of OpenOffice where I can do more than I can with HandComm Moble, the ability to run a PalmOS emulator (the wife uses a Palm), and the general ability to play with the OS a little more.

Install Beta3... It is a "1 shot deal" you follow the steps you did yesterday but with out the extra steps...

Try it out... you will like it if you are looking for the mini laptop feel...

Come back with any questions you have (but try to search first to see if it was already answered :-)
