New SL-5500 inbound, where should I start hacking?
« on: March 05, 2004, 09:07:47 am »
Hi All,

I\'m an experienced linux hacker about to get the SL-5500 and use it for the first time next week.  I have no problems compiling stuff and maintaining my own system ... I do embedded systems development work for a living, and am a veteran C/C++ programmer.

What are your recommendations for where to start with the SL-5500 in terms of \'best ROM to get rolling as a hacker\'?  Are there current development efforts for interesting ROMs that I might be able to contribute to?

So far, it has been a pretty confusing field for ROM files for the 5500 - I know that every ROM maker has had their own agenda, and their own needs/wants for their ROMs, but this makes it somewhat confusing to the newcomer.

What\'s the best option if I want a) good source-control/compatability with my Intel-based desktop linux system (running either SuSE, ROCK Linux, or Gentoo) and  fairly decent access to some of the already-existing SL-5500 apps that have been packaged already.  I have to confess that I detest package systems in general that don\'t include the source ...

I guess I\'ll go with Gentoo first off the bat, but since I have some GTK+2.0/Framebuffer style apps that I would like to port to the 5500, maybe this isn\'t the best option? I can\'t seem to work out whether GTK+fb has been implemented, or is even feasible, with the 5500 yet ... but I sure would like to know!

Also, which ROM has the best sound/audio support so far?  Anything in particular with good ALSA/LADSPA support?

One thing that bothers me about the Qtopia stuff is that the restrictive licensing options if I want to release a commercial app ... have I just misinterpreted the license?  I\'m really interesting in being able to write GTKFB apps for the SL5500, which don\'t require a windowing system/other massive GUI libs in order to run.  Maybe something SDL-based, even?

Any comments you have in this regard are greatly appreciated.  I\'m looking forward to contributing to this community as much as I can ... once I get my 5500 system up and running and well integrated.

(Reaaaaallly looking forward to giving the distcc cross-compiling environment a test drive with the 5500 ... if that works out well, I may end up using it for some of my custom hardware projects...)

I still have old Opie/kernel combo (OZ 3.2) running on my Z as this is proven to work. Currently, I don\'t know if all the 3.3.6 issues have been resolved regarding the sleep/powersaving modes have been solved, we probably just don\'t read too much about it now.
