Zaurus Out Of Production?
« Reply #135 on: April 06, 2007, 04:39:53 am »
Hi all,

some more informations and answers for you:

@daniel3000
It's definitely no Aprils joke. I just got the information
that the next shipment is on its way from Japan.
They really continue making them but today they
announced, that the price will go up a bit

@Cresho
No, sorry. THIS was a joke. There's no SL-C4000XL
coming. It was stopped because also Sharp engineers
are reading this forum and after they read Fish's
post, they're now looking how to include a cake baker.
The Bluetooth-Rice-Cooker interface is XML-based. So
they hope to include the cake-baker protocol within the
next 12 months.
(Zaurus Cake Baker SHARP CE-CB1 will be available as
external device only. Capacity up to 10 cpd/cakes per day)

@xjqian
The good news: They're still making SL-6000s.
The bad news: It's the japanese version and they're
so incredible expensive, that we decided to call the
SL-6000 "no longer available".
Funny sidenote: We just got a 10xpack of EA-BL09
batteries for the SL-6000. Produced March 2007(!).
Doesn't look like a totally dead product, eh ?

I'm off now, installing the webcam watching the garden
to see where they hide all the easter eggs for the kids

this is amazingly good news. So why did Sharp say they were stopping production?

Normally these things are kept a secret otherwise they might not be able to sell remaining stock, either
- because people don't want to buy an obsolete product (Sony are v bad at this, they left left owners of Palm/Clie home and dry),
or
- there's a new product coming and noone buys an old model

In this case no new model came and they carried on production. It's unlikely that Sharp would have tested the water to see if there'd be a clamour to continue making them (as they don't appear to pay heed to users), as that's a high risk strategy. It could be that they were taken aback to find demand increased because people sitting on the fence waiting for the next model decided to get in a last-chance buy. After all, whilst the Z is flawed (sorry, but it is!), it has less flaws than any other current PDA.

Another possibility is that the new em-one has been delayed into production, or isn't a big seller or other problem and they have spare capacity so decided to make more Zs.

Maybe they were intending to launch a new Z model but there were problems with supply of parts (e.g. the "new" 20GB microdrives simply haven't appeared on the market).

Sadly, speculation apart, I suspect we'll never really know the full story of the zaurus strategy (there might not even be one, it often strikes me more as a drunk random walk through handheld technology!).

Here's a link about the EM-one. It's a forum post with 6 pages

Someone posted at the last post on page 6, that they think Sharp isn't going to release any more of these.

I'm just glad that I have both a C3100 and C3200, and hope the Zaurus line lasts a lot longer.
I might even consider getting a 3rd model if there is a new model in the future.

Perhaps we are witnessing a corporate power struggle between the Pro-Zaurus and Pro-Windows Mobile or Papyrus forces at Sharp.  We know that the Zaurus has a solid following with the Japanese public so, perhaps they bolstered the Pro-Zaurus group with upper management so, the Zaurus line has been given a last minute reprieve.
I think I'm coming down with what kahm's got!  I now have 3 Zaurii in house!  ;)

That'd be interesting.... though a 1000/3x00/ with an 8 gig drive is probnably what they'd do.  It would be soooooo nice if they'd make a real upgrade

Or maybe the rumor was just strategic to get rid of stock for the
new SL-C4000XL with 3D holographic XGA, toaster interface,
GSM, WiFi and bottle opener...

That would be great news!  Especially the bottle opener!!!  It's so difficult to juggle my Zaurus while opening another beer.  Sharp thinks of everything!

How hard was the drive swap-- I have a 6G that I might pop in the 3100 if it isn't like neurosurgery

It doesn't look too hard. I had my C3100 open earlier to look at the option of a full USB port. It looks like you just lift up the motherboard, pull out the old drive, and stick in a new one. I didn't look too closely, though.

The hardest part would seem to be finding a small enough screwdriver to open the Z. I bought a $5 set of philips-head screwdrivers at radio shack that work great.
