Ted, Abacus And Siag For Pdax
« on: January 21, 2007, 06:16:59 am »
I've just tried and failed to get SIAG office compiled under pdaXii13. I've been searching OESF and the net and although I've read posts about people running siag under pdaX I can't seem to find any packages anywhere- pdaXrom.org is down AGAIN which hasn't helped!  Anybody know where I can get siag packages that will work under pdaXii13?

gnumeric and abiword run great on modern PCs but their 1min+ loading times on the Z aren't much fun. Are there any other decent, LIGHTWEIGHT (i.e not GTK2 or QT/KDE based) speadsheet or wp progs I should consider? They must be able to open xls/doc or use a format that I can easily convert my xls/doc files into. Pathetic writer supposedly opens doc files and I've found an app that can convert xls into .wk1 (Lotus-123 files as used by siag) so I should be OK there.

Thanks!

Thanks plcg!

The package installed OK but unfortunately when I try to run siag or pw i just get the error

Illegal instruction

Maybe it was compiled for an older pdaXrom which is incompatible with b3/pdaXii13?

EDIT

pdaxrom.org is back up for the moment it seems but there is no sign of siag at http://mail.pdaxrom.org/contrib/list.txt

You got further than I did at least, so thats good news. I'm sure that font error can't be hard to fix, just don't ask me about it   Have you checked the feeds to see if there are any XFree font packages you don't have installed? I'm presuming this prevents siag loading right?

kkazakov13: I'd be interested in trying out your version, and I think I've got a fairly complete set of fonts and libraries installed. I can let you know if I got any further with running it. I run Beta3 also.

Abiword is great, but even under Fluxbox's faster loading times, it still seems a little too bloated for this machine

I'd love a working version of SIAG

It doesn't take over a minute to load either of them on either of my Zs. Perhaps something else is slowing the load down?

By the way, I'm not saying it's not a good idea to have SIAG, because it is, but rather saying that Abiword and Gnumeric aren't too bad.

Ok, I will package it up and post it here, in few hours. I've got no errors while building. I also installed every font package I found in the feeds, but I guess there is some setup missing, some file needs editing probably ... we have to find out.

Yes, I find Abiword and Gnumeric pretty enough for me, but I'm just trying to help here ... there's nothing with which SIAG can impress me

Yes, please do package it kkazakov. I'm not expecting siag to have anywhere near the amount of features of gnumeric or abiword, but the extra features those package have I don't usually need and if we get it working and it loads in half the time (or less) then its very much been worth our while.

Maybe I was exaggerating saying they take a minute to load- its probably more life 20/30 secs but this still seems too much when you're used to seeing the same progs load instantly on your PC or you've been using something like a Psion for years where all the apps load in a sec.

Here are the packages, please test it out if you get the same error as me. I hope there are no other library dependencies, but tell me, will add the library if sth is missing.

I'll not be available after about 10 hours for about 24 hours, but when back, will try to solve things, if you haven't think of sth

Thanks kk!

You're right in that siag /pw complain about missing fonts but thats not the real problem, the real problem being that a lot of the buttons in the dialogue boxes (OKs,  Cancels, Yes and No's etc.) don't respond when you click on them which makes it pretty much unuseable.

They do seem to load faster but not that much faster- not that it matters if they don't work!

Can you start it in console and see if there is any output? How you passed the missing fonts complaint ?

Running siag or pw from console prints 2 errors:

Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset

but they both load fine after that.

This is under pdaXii13 5.2 on C3000- I didn't have to install any extra fonts to get siag to load. As far as font related packages, pdaXii13 has

x11-fonts-misc
webfonts-arial
webfonts-courier
webfonts-lucon
webfonts-times
webfonts-verdana
ttf-bitstream-vera

installed as standard. Maybe I've missed some off this list?
