Altogether now!

"Could this replace the Zaurus?"

Beautiful children! Now RTFA!

http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/articles/...athena-en.shtml

This is the nearest I've seen HTC come to producing a worthy successor to the uni, but it's not what I'm waiting for. The article teases us by hinting that HTC do have a true uni successor in the works but says no more on that.

For me the flipstart looks to be the most worthy successor to the c3x00 series. I just hope it has build quality to match the Z, decent battery life (can't see it to be honest, but...) and isn't too expensive (again, can't see it being cheap on launch). I reckon I'll be sticking with my c3100 for a couple of years yet.

Hmmm ... looks pretty decent ... esp the specs ...

Quote
The display is one of the X7500’s highlights, as it utilizes 5” Samsung’s matrix boasting VGA resolution and touch input. Undoubtedly, for a notebook or a tablet PC it’s almost nothing, but still, it is the biggest matrix ever used in communicators.

The very unique feature of this communicator is availability of a built-in VGA/TV out (connecter ether via adapter or docking station). The company’s special HTC Ext USB can be linked up with a VGA adapter, while for TV out here is Composite/S-Video adapter. By the way, HTC Ext USB socket supports not only USB client, but host as well, in other words you can make use of various peripherals (for example mouse, keyboard or an external storage). And for the very first time the company provides a wired remote control for music playback management, which can be connected to any headphones compatible with 3.5 mm audio jack.

The communicator shows off totally new filling, as in course of its development they almost didn’t turn to the prior solutions. But even though its hardware is of some interest, it brings nothing new to the table. The CPU found on the X7500 is the old XScale PXA270 624 Mhz, while its phone part is handled by Qualcomm MSM6275 (quad-band GSM, UMTS 850/1900/2100 Mhz, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA). A built-in graphics accelerator, ATI Imageon 2282, is onboard. However the most fundamental leap up is a bundled 10 Gb hard drive with G sensor, allowing the drive to fall into sleep mode if the device starts falling down. At that users will be free to expand this storage space with miniSD memory cards. And such features as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth don’t deserve a special note anymore due to being embedded in nearly each and every communicator by default.

looks nice, i think my problem apart from bieng mobile gadget compolsive is that i want about 3 sizes of gadgets with slightly differing capabilities.

so in my mind this would ocupie the "away from home for extended periods" or "In need of some graphics grunt (ie entertainment)" instead of the general PDA market, will be intresting when people have more than one mobile computer (laptop, smartphone, this thing) and they actually decide at the beggining of the day which one they will need

my htc tytn fills in the "away from home for a bit" option ie day trips where no majer entertainment is needed apart from music and genral light duties (calls and PIM)

my Z was really in the power catagorey, for when i absoultly absoultly needed a linux box (most of the time )

i wonder if there is a market in porting and maintaining a distro/linux for several PDAs, i am sure it would get more coverage if it had opie or somthing and came with a "click to install" interface, so same as we use nowdays only with less debugging messages and a pretty skin

i can see it now "unbuntu portable edition" or "fedora mobile", apprentlly there is a ARM oprt of fedora somwhere (from what i can gather)

If only they'd made a real clamshell out of it. That keyboard setup looks wonky. Specs look decent, otherwise.

Oh, and it runs Windows Mobile, which I hate with a passion and is only a couple of very small steps from being generally useless

And they're expecting it to cost ~1500-2000. For that price I'll buy one of the Sony UXx0's, or hopefully a Flipstart.

what you all really want is the Menitto 2400. You just have to wait less than 400 years until it will be available

I've come to the conclusion that there are three complimentary form factors you'd need, 1/ phone/PDA, 2/ easily portable laptop, and 3/ full-size laptop (desktop replacement) or desktop. I do like the Athena, and could probably make it do the job of 1 and 2, as I am not a massive user of mobile phone.

You could do this with docking stations, make the phone be a mass data store, and attach to laptop or desktop. Alternatively, the only way at the moment would be to  use a gigantic flash memory card or microdrive (10 to 100GB for me), carry it with a small number of readers/adaptors, and then you can have all you data and home directory on the phone, pda/zaurus, on laptop, on desktop etc.

This one looks cool, but for me x86-compatible is a must for my zaurus replacement.

Also, I'm looking for a device where I can run firefox at an acceptable speed.

You'll be too late !

Win95 was released in 1994
Win2000 was released in 1999
AutoCad 2007 was released in 2006 and I expect version 2008 to come out in april 2007.

So you'll have to launch it in 2399 or it will be a commercial flop ...

Chero.
HP-95LX -> HP Jornada 680 -> SL-C860 -> SL-C3100 -> Fuji u810 -> SL-C1000 -> HTC uni -> SL-C860 -> SL-C760.
March 12 2009 : Back because the Zaurus is one of a kind.
SL-C760 : pdaXrom
Pandora pre-ordered -> received and tested : great device but not my cup of tea -> sold.
