Ahhh! Thats better! The world of portable hyper-geekdom returns!

So what was the reason for the downtime this time mr offroadgeek? Isn't this forum being hosted by ibiblio now? I would've thought it hard to get any bigger than that so whats the battle plan to try and prevent further extended outages?

yeah, these outages without warning are troubling. at least we have antikz's site to fall back on.

I think the problem is more about how to replicate the database that stores all the postings, rather than mirror the web pages. Taking an HTML snapshot is quite inefficient, and also loses a lot of the meta data, and also is much less useful for searching because the search DB would see all the page "fluff" as well as the messages.

I did ask in the forum forum itself about doing snapshots but didn't get an answer, which is why I am worried that the operators are losing interest or finding it too much of a burden.

yeah, i meant database replication and not the http stuff as thats the easy part

it would have to be snapshots as well because i imagine that trying to do realtime updates to the backup server would be painful, not to mention the remerging when the primary goes back up

Now, now, let's not complain too hard, or offroadgeek might wanna get paid for this.

Not that I would find say $5 a month too steep, I already pay $12 a quarter at sff.net.

I probably ought to contribute here once in a while too, ne?

offroadgeek did warn us, as Greg2 mentioned, but I don't think it dawned on him that oesf is so very important to us and that it would be nice if he or another admin could post something somewhere that google could find so we'd know what's happening.  And I remember cringing when I saw the announcement, wondering when and for how long.

But when it happened and I googled "oesf down" and got nothing...maybe next time someone could do this, either at someone else's forum, or one of the irc.freenode.net channels that gets spidered.
