Socket Lan Cf Shown As Unsupported?
« on: June 06, 2007, 05:19:53 pm »
This is in Cacko ROM
When I plug this LAN card in, I get "unsupported card"

I did cardctl ident and got this.
Code: [Select]
Socket 0:
product info: "Socket", CF 10/100 Ethernet Card", "Revision B", "05/11/06"
 manfid: 0x0104, 0x02d2
 function: 6 (network)
I looked in /etc/pcmcia/config and found only one entry similar to my card, it is this.

card "Socket 10/100 Ethernet CF Card"
  manfid 0x0104, 0x0145
  bind "pcnet_cs"

So I copied/pasted that entry and changed the number to match my card.
I still get "unsupported card" when I plug it in.
What am I missing here?

This is a pretty new card as shown in the first line "05/11/06"

EDIT:
I tried this card in pdaxii13, but got "unsupported card" in the cards applet.
I tried this card first on Cacko because (to me) it seems that Cacko is easier to get things working.
EDIT2:
Rebooting made my card recognized, but I still haven't connected to my router with it yet. Seems there are some more hurdles to overcome.
I wanted to get this card setup for certain hotels that only have a LAN and no wifi.

A long time ago I owned such a card for a few days and luckily could return it to the store. Back then it just didn't work with the Zaurus. One issue was that the Zaurus did not give it enough power. There is another model of ethernet card, the "Socket low power" which works fine with the Zaurus. I've had one without issues for a long time.

According to the datasheet, it is 3.3 and 5 volt compatable.
I bought it at StreamlineCPUs and that site is now gone, I guess I'm out a $100.00
It's called Rugged CF ethernet card. It is really durable in the way it is manufactured.

I tried connecting with it to my router in one of its available ethernet ports.
I ended up having to reset and reinstall my router.

The pdf file on the CD says:
Universal Compatibility
The Socket CompactFlash Type I card work in Type I and II CF slots of
Pocket PC. The ultra thin Type I form factor also fits into a standard PC Card
adapter, so you can use it in the PC Card slot of compatible Windows Mobile
devices. Additionally, because the Socket card can use either 3.3 or 5 volt
supplies, it’s the world’s first universal mobile Ethernet adapter.
Battery Friendly®
The Socket Battery Friendly design makes the Rugged CF 10/100 Card the most energy
efficient in the industry.
The card helps you maximize your mobile computer’s battery life by using only 22 mA,
while some Ethernet PC Cards draw as much as 300 mA.

I guess I'll have to figure out how to make this work, since I cannot take it back to the store.
There are 3 PDF files. I'll post them here.

hacking the config files makes it recognised but that won't help you because you don't have pcnet_cs.o which is the module/driver it needs.

Where can the pcnet_cs.o driver be found? Is it available? Or do I already have it on my Cacko Zaurus??

I guess I'm out of luck, I have no clue as to compiling stuff or what file I would need.
I cannot even find pcnet_cs on my Zaurus, but there are many references to pcnet_cs in the config file.

It seems to do something when it is binded to pcnet_cs
My router light on port 4 (this is where I have it connected) lights for awhile when I try to connect.
All I need is the "o" on pcnet_cs.o
or a file called pcnet_cs.o
below is a dmesg output.
Code: [Select]
eth0: NE2000 Compatible: io 0xf6000300, irq 135, auto xcvr, hw_addr 00:C0:1B:07:D5:3A
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
pxa_pcmcia_init(0)
eth0: NE2000 Compatible: io 0xf6000300, irq 135, auto xcvr, hw_addr 00:C0:1B:07:D5:3A
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
pxa_pcmcia_suspend(0)
$

This is an awfully expensive card to just chuck into the trash bin...

I found pcnet_cs.o in this package.
[a href=\"http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/details.phtml?package=pcnet-modules-2.4.18-rmk2&official=&format=]http://ipkgfind.handhelds.org/details.phtm...ficial=&format=[/url]

If you open it, it has a directory structure like this.
/lib/modules/2.4.18-rmk2/kernel/drivers/net/pcmcia/pcnet_cs.o (19kb) 3/22/2002

Opps, forgot the depends, if this really matters, cause I don't think this will work anyway.

Depends:     kernel-modules-2.4.18-rmk2, packet-modules-2.4.18-rmk2, pcmcia-modules-2.4.18-rmk2, 8390-modules-2.4.18-rmk2

What is the difference between these two?
pcnet_cs
and
pcnet_cs.o

Is pcnet_cs already compiled into the kernel that Cacko uses?
I cannot find pcnet_cs anywhere, but if I bind my card to it in /etc/pcmcia/config, the message about my card comes up on the taskbar when I insert it.
If I bind the same card to pcnet_cs.o, I get "unsupported card" on the taskbar when I insert it.
OK, we know pcnet_cs.o isn't actually there, but how do I get the message about my card if pcnet_cs isn't available?
Is pcnet_cs "hidden" inside the kernel?

BTW, pcnet_cs is supposed to work with NE2000 cards.
One paper ("driver changes") says my card is NE2000 compatible and the userguide says it is NOT NE2000 compatible.
Which is it ??

pcnet_cs is the name of the module, whereas pcnet_cs.o is the actual file containing the module.

think of it as in, you run notepad to launch notepad, whereas the actual executable is called notepad.exe

as for the compatability issue, raise it with the manufacturer...
