Wanted: C860 Or C750
« on: May 29, 2007, 08:06:41 am »
EDIT: Looking for a C860 or C750.

Original post follows...
Hello everyone.

I'm looking at getting a C series Zaurus (finally), after being out of the market for ages (My Nokia 9500 is pretty good, but I miss Linux, and the lack of a VPN client is very annoying- I can't use the wireless at uni).

However, I'm still not sure which one I want. As I can't stand typing on mobile phone keypads, the idea is use my Nokia 6210i and connect via bluetooth for text messaging.

USB Host would be nice (and an internal CF slot), but I think the Cxx00's look too thick and bulky for my liking.
I really like the look of the 750, and the 700 isn't bad, but I'm concerned that the battery life might become a problem. So an 860 (I think the 760 looks awful)?

This all depends on availability and price. At the moment, C3x00's are plentiful. C7x0/860's are somewhat harder to find.

Is anyone willing to sell their 7x0/860?
How much would you want for it?

Thanks
Simon

Conics.net is your friend; they still list second hand 750's, 760's and 860s, and their service is great. You don't want a 700 even if you could find one, it has a buggy CPU.

The cxxxx's are thicker and heavier than the cxxx's, and I kinda miss my 860 for that, but the lack of usb host really bugged me after a while. If you're just using it as a pda it's ok, but if you treat it like a palmtop computer like I do it's limiting.

As for battery life, it's pretty darn good even with a smaller battery. And have you seen those ridiculously cheap 9800mah PSP (=Z compatible) external batteries on Ebay - wow!
SL-C3100 with usb power mod running debian eabi
pdaXii13 still on the NAND for dualbooting
16GB SDHC! (a new one, after I sat on the old one and it went kaput)
D-Link 660 wifi, Socket Bluetooth rev H
External 9800mAh LiIon battery and slimline dvd drive
Homebrew microphone and remote

Ooo they're pretty cheap too.

What about import tax though?

If it gets held in grief at customs, you pay.   I ordered stuff before, nothing gets held in customs.  I bought my sl-c1000 from geekstuff4u.com
SL-C1000 w/pdaXii13 Akita (base) + select apps
4GB Transcend 150x SD, 4GB Transcend 120x CF
Planex gw-cf11x CF Wi-Fi, Buffalo CF LAN
UT-41 USB GPS
Misc other SD and CF cards

the c3100 is quite a bit heavier than the 860 I had before, but I got used to it quickly, I would probably have regretted getting the C1000 as not only does it lack the internal CF microdrive, it actually lacks the circuitry too so you could never upgrade.

Right, C860 it is (or maybe C750 or C700).

Anyone got one to sell?

I'd say go for a C750/C760, as the C700 lacks RAM and has a CPU bug and the C860 is a more expensive C760, unless I'm mistaken. If you don't need a lot of apps installed, go for a C750, otherwise get a C760 and th smaller battery/battery cover.

Just my thoughts.

I liked the C750, but I was thinking that battery life might be a problem. Are large batteries/covers easy to get if I buy a C750 and find it's lacking?

EDIT: The C860 is only 15 pounds more on conics so there probably isn't much point in getting a lower spec one. That said, I'm still dubious about buying from them, and I have to pay import tax, which is why I'm still asking here if anyone has one to sell.

Yes, large batterys/battery covers are easily available, as are smaller ones.

It might be a good idea to get a C760/C860, then go for the smaller battery if it's too bulky.
