Smartphones are bound to ship faster now that Ericsson and Texas Instruments have joined forces.

Despite the fact that smartphones have been around for years, the typical smartphone still faces many delays before finally shipping.

Aiming to decrease the time-to-market for smartphones, Ericsson and Texas Instruments have joined forces to provide a portfolio of wireless technology platforms. The solutions will combine small and power efficient 3G modems from Ericsson with OMAP applications processors from TI.

Another advantage will be its Open OS support, enabling manufacturers to select from a range of operating systems, including Windows Mobile, Symbian S60, Symbian UIQ and Linux.

The joint solutions will also benefit from Ericsson's IOT program, offering a guarantee of full compliance with operator requirements, as well as a more rapid roll-out of products.

Handsets based on these solutions are expected to be available on the market in the second half of 2008.
