Now this looks interesting to me!

WiFi
Safari browser
Wireless iTunes
16GB Flash storage
same dimensions as the iPhone but only 8mm thick
iPhone's multitouch screen.

Engadget's Photo Gallery

Anyone else interested!?

Looks like Apple just stepped back into the PDA business.

I'm very, very interested.  However, if the iPhone software hacks are solid and I could use it on T-Mobile, the newly repriced 8GB iPhone at $399 looks even better.  I give up 8GB but I can replace my Z and my phone.

My only issue is that I like ebooks in various formats and there is not a reader on the iPhone or the iPod Touch.  You can read pdfs through Safari which is a plus.

My Z's days are numbered.  I'll own one of these Apple products before year end.

With Wifi, Skype should work and it becomes WiFi-iPhone, PDA, Internet tablet, MP3 player.

It's hardly a PDA. All it can do is play music, videos and surf the 'net. You can't enter a memo, you can't type up anything significant, there is no e-mail client, etc. etc.

Unless you can freely add third-party apps to this thing it's a nice looking piece of crap. It's basically a regular iPod with a web browser and WiFi (and less storage space). The only hope of this thing ever being used as a PDA is if it can operate nicely with Google Docs (and even then you would need a WiFi connection). For that price I may as well just get a regular iPod with a much larger capacity (big hard drive instead of small flash) for music and videos, because I would still have to carry my Z or another PDA around to actually do anything.

The only purpose I could find for this is browsing the web while sitting comfortably on a couch or something (ie use it as a mobile internet device).
Conics SL-C3200 running pdaXrom beta3 and XFCE with a Planex WiFi CF card.

It's not really a PDA as is. But with linux on it, a lot of things would be possible !

This is nice but for me there are still a few key things missing:

1. Broadband wireless (my typical usage scenario is laptop+wifi at home so I see no reason to use smaller devices instead of laptop at home). But I do not want to carry laptop to work every day so broadband wireless or at least bluetooth + cell phone modem are key for train trips).

2. At least 64GB flash storage (or CF/SD slot)  (I want all my music with me - no compromise)

3. EBook reader

Which means I wait another year or two for some future release of iphone touch (or even better some new clamshell umpc similar to zaurus)

Actually, it has Contacts, Calendar and a Notes Taking app so your basic PDA functions are there and it has a sync function that you don't have to jump through hoops to get working for Windows and MacOS X which is what a larger percentage of the intended audience will really care about.

I agree that there is no email client but, I do most of email web based on my Zaurus and alot of the my non-techie friends do the same.   As long as the version of Safari can handle gmail and other web-based mail clients (the MacOS X one works just fine for this for me) then you would be covered off here too.

You all make good points that this device is lacking a few things many of us are accustomed to having and may not be a device you could switch to......today.  I believe what Apple has done in the iPhone and now the iPod Touch is created a new platform that will be the basis for future innovation.

Many of the things desired are software related --- easy fix.  There are a few hardware desires that would be nice (external expansion slot, usb, speakers/mic) that are not expensive items to add if they choose to.

Is it the perfect Z replace now?  No.  But the upside potential of this device is amazing and I hope they sell a ton of them so Apple will continue to improve it, because I see one in my pocket in the not so distant future.

Why is there such a lack of excitement here about the Neo?  These phones are already being sold to developers, and the consumer model is scheduled to be released in Oct.

It has almost everything folks here are asking for.  Am I missing something?

I for one am much more exited about the Neo than the iPod, I'm just not vocal about it.
