I currently have Sharp 3:10 rom on my 5500.  Can anybody please explain to me step by step how one goes about switching.  Note: i am a newbie and do not understand too much of all of this.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Manfly2000!

It\'s pretty easy. You should look at the Documentation at openzaurus.org, it\'s really short, but covers all the neccessary details. Basically, it\'s just

1) Find the appropriate initrd and zImage for you
2) Put these on a compact flash card
3) Flash

3) Is just a matter of pressing the right buttons, and I assume you know how to do 2) (just one thing: Rember to rename the files to EXACTLY \"initrd.bin\" and \"zImage\"). Now 1) isn\'t really a problem as well: Once you decided if you want OZ 3.2 (stable) or 3.3.5 (unstable), there\'s just one initrd you can download (it\'s named a bit differently, but you\'ll see it on openzaurus.org) for the 5500. Now there are different kernels availabe (these are the zImage files), and the difference between each is how they use the RAM. Read the docs for a real explanation, you may want to start with the one that has something like \"32-32\" in it\'s name, that\'s pretty common.

Hope that helps, cheers

Get a CF card (at least 16mb in size) formatted as fat16.

Download initrd.bin (filesystem image) and zImage (kernel and memory layout) files for your 5500 (there are various zimages depending on how much of the 64Mb of RAM you want to use for storage and how much for \'RAM\'). There are a few different versions of OZ available. OZ3.2 is stable but a bit old now (old kernel), 3.3.5 is okay (new kernel a bit unstable), 3.3.6pre1 requires compat libs (= more work for you - get searching :-)) but is stable as far as I know.

Check md5sums of the two files (to check for corruption during the download).

Place the two files in the root directory of the cf card (ie in /mnt/cf)

Make sure Windows hasn\'t messed about with the names, they should be \"initrd.bin\" and \"zImage\"

Do the usual - backup ;-), switch off, plug in power, take back off Z, hold down C & D and press the hard reset button.

The lights should light up and stay lit for about 5 min, once they go out hit hard reset again, stick the back back on and hit the on button.
