Zaurus Sl-c760- Need Help
« on: October 05, 2008, 06:23:01 pm »
Hi everyone, I am new to this PDA thing! I have a Zaurus SL-C760, and every thing is in Japanese. My question is how do I change the language from Japanes, to English?

Also, I don't have the software to install on my computer so that I can plug it in to my zaurus, is there a website that can get the driver software for my computer from, so I can install the program?

Thanks to all help!!

Welcome to OESF and the world of Zaurus!

There are several options available to change from Japanese to English (depending on whether you want to keep Japanese abiltiy):

1. Install an alternative ROM - ie Cacko - has the option to add Japanese support
2. Change /home/zaurus/Settings/locale.conf to read 'en' or 'zh_TW' instead of 'ja' for the language setting.
3. Remove the qm translation files in /home/QtPalmtop/i18n/ja and comment out the various lines in .desktop files that have the japanese names of programs. I wrote a script that does this and it basically follows the info here http://mspencer.net/stuff/c700conv.html

I would suggest option 1. especially if you are not interested in using Japanese, but WARNING it means flashing a new ROM. Something that could stop your zaurus working correctly (although it is something that many people have successfully done many times - myself included)

Cheers

I would go with option 2 of stubear's suggestion for now. It is the easiest to revert and the least likely to do damage. You sound like a newbie (no offense) so you should read some information first. Try the wiki (click the OESF link at the top of the page) or go to the Trisoft (www.trisoft.de) website. They will have instructions about "flashing the ROM" which is what you do with the cacko file you downloaded, if you decide to go that route. A random computer store guy will not know what to do.

If you have a CF or SD card and a card reader, then get a console program either from the CD that came with the Zaurus (it's called console....) or better download qconsole from the Zaurus Software Index. Put the ipk on the card and put it on the Zaurus. You have to guess which app is the add-remove software (it launches with 3 big buttons, click on the top button and you should see the ipk listed click on it and then click OK maybe twice and quit the program). Launch the console, su to root and edit /etc/locale.conf changing language=ja to language=en, save the edits and type reboot on the console, the Zaurus will reboot in english. I assume you can use vi and has seen a linux config file before. If not maybe you should search around for more detailed instructions.

Felipe

So the only thing that I don't understand is the part where it says launch the console. I see the gkonsole but it has a little blue circle next to it. So my main question is how do I launch gkonsole?

You mean it has a little blue circle within the add/remove software app? That means that the program is installed. Look for a program icon with a black rectangle with a ">" sign on it and a shell in front. That's the console app. which you need to launch. Now, have you ever used the command line before? Because that's what that thing is going to give you, so read up on it.

Follow these instructions. It's a link on the previous forum thread. Has pictures and everything and I have nothing to add to it, except you might want to click on the link for "simple vi commands" (you'll see it when you get there) because the instructions are a bit terse at that point.

OK thank you so much for all of your help, but I have one question. When I try to get online with it, it says I need a divice card for communication, What is that, and where can I get one?
