Netwalker Vs Zaurus (lets Say C1000)

How does compare work and play on netwalker vs zaurus?

I am using c1000. Im very happy with usb host, keyboard, battery time, video performance (cacko), linux onboard, cf and sd card slots.
I am not satisfied with amount of ram, usb pigtail, issues with zubuntu (video performance), overral performance in memory hungry applications (so thats second time first problem).

I dont use wifi at all. I use BT a bit (syncing with phone, connecting through gprs).
I like to doddle in qcad, dia, read ebooks, a bit of web browsing.

I would use RDP connections a lot if i could connect VGA monitor to netwalker.

And my question:
How netwalker compares to zaurus performance?
I have read that there are some issues with video performance but is it that big problem?

I would buy one if I could do as much as on my zaurus (with zubuntu) plus some desktop/laptop activities.
Currently i have oqo 01+ but it does ~1,5h battery time and is a bit too slow in xp. I could not make power governors under linux do more than 90minutes of work. Thats why I am looking for next personal mobile tool...

Netwalker 'out of the box' feels more like a regular laptop computer, just much, much smaller, due to running Ubuntu, just like a laptop....

You can change to Zubuntu, Xubuntu, etc if you want...

Also, Netwalker feels more powerful than Netwalker, has larger keyboard and display, but almost shirt pocketable, more like jacket pocketable. So, due to larger keyboard and display, I enjoy working on Netwalker much more than on Zaurus. It's really nice that it has built-in wifi (can be turned on and off...), standard size USB port, and a microSD slot that can take large size card (I have 16GB card in mine...)...

Video works OK and I installed Flash Lite, so, can watch YouTube and other videos....

My linux background is quite solid. I am aware that i can turn netwalker into almost everything which can be done with linux.

My problem is to find a device which will replace most of the devices I am carrying now.

I got oqo to do the trick but it failed. Wakes up too long, battery time is too short, performance is so-so. It gave me a lot lighter backpack but I still needs to carry c1000 to be happy with ebooks and mp3...

I dont want to get new toy just to discover it is not solving my "backpack problem"

OK. After some time I can make a comparison.
I was using zaurus mainly for ebooking, games (cards and shisen like) and music. That was the 85% time spent with zaurus.
Rest of the time was abit of video, spreadsheet, notetaking and unix like activities.

I was using internet on zaurus only couple of times. Dangling cable for BT dongle was not convinient and WiFi is territory unknown to me.
My zaurus was equipped with 2GB CF and 2GB sd cards. Lots of space for emulator roms, books, images and so on.

The main pain of zaurus was RAM. That's why i tried to switch to next device. I considered eeepc but those are too big. I got oqo 01+ but it eats battery quite fast even in sleep mode. And hibernating takes about 30-40 seconds so it was unacceptable for notetaking.

Netwalker has only two disadvantages: it's not x86 compatible (i did not tried to emulate it under qemu but will try) and have no external buttons (available with lid closed).
I have no swap under netwalker and it is running smoothly.
Copying between one usb slot to other gives from 3,5MB/s to over 10MB/s (ram is acting as a buffer so 3,5MB is bottom for not loaded system - Tested on 2Gb files)
Most of the software is relatively quick to launch (planner, gimp, qcad, firefox about 20-40 seconds) and quite responsive.
PDF viewers are quick and shows documents very nicely. No corrupted graphics, no slowdowns, no lockups.
Video playback is acceptable.
Battery time gives me about 5-6h of normal work uptime and about 3h videoplayback (not measured just estimated).


I am happy with migration.

My advices for new owners:
Get small usb hub. Get mini usb cable for it.
Get BT dongle (I did not found BT with miniusb connector).
Get Big SD card (I got 8GB and it seems thats ok)
Get usb-ethernet dongle (but look for pegasus one, new ones have different chip and seems there is no module for it)


And finally one aesthetic problem: If lid is closed and sand gets between lid and battery lid and then lid is opened, sand will make ugly scratch on battery lid.
