Network and Sync problems with Windows
« on: March 25, 2004, 03:21:30 pm »
Hello,

I just got my zaurus and I love it!  I use an SL-5500. I\'m having a hard time getting it to connect to the internet through the usb port.  I can get it to sync with the computer fine.

I\'ve tried different things I\'ve found on the web, but all have produced the same result:

each time I run the network and sync program, under \"Settings,\" my connection fails with the computer (with qtopia desktop, to be able to sync and transfer files and such).  I can\'t restore it, and only by hard resetting am I able to connect again.  If I do that, it works fine again.

What\'s the trick to surfing the web with the zaurus?  Really I just want to pull files off it in a better way the qtopia will let me: be able to access the file tree, etc...  I\'m out of ideas.

-thanks!

First read this post:

http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...iewtopic&t=2640

And get IP syncing to work.

After that you have two choices you can try to use Windows Internet share or enable routing.  I enabled routing.

To enable routing set:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParametersIPEnableRouter = 1

And reboot.

The on your Zaurus set the windows IP as the gateway and setup /etc/resolv.conf with a known DNS server (use what windows uses).

I am IP syncing with BT and using XP as a net gateway using the above just fine.

Thanks,

I\'m using the Sharp ROM, and I\'m trying to connect to 2k prof. here at work, and xp at home.

I\'ve tried using Analog proxy to connect, by carefully following someone\'s instructions, running the network and sync dialogue and setting my IP information manually (although probably not correctly).

I followed these intructions, which didn\'t work either:
http://zaurus.kruss.com/howto-ethernet-wxp.php

and another which told me to run the network and sync on \"auto-detect\" ip information, which didn\'t work.

Every time I try it, the same thing happens, I loose all connection to my computer.  (the computer still knows it\'s plugged in though).

DATAJERK:
thanks for the info.  I read over your post.  I\'ve looked into those files myself, although I still don\'t know what they should correctly be for it to work.  To enable IP syncing, as you suggest, do I need to do anything on my pc?  Then, should I run the \"network and sync\" dialogues, or are you suggesting I just edit the files?  I understand what you said in the article, but I\'m not sure where to start.  What should my IP address be when it\'s correct?  Should I specify it, or let it auto-detect, and then change it to something else?

thanks for all your help!

p.s what is BT?

Don\'t edit the files, they were listed for informational purposes only.

To enable IP sync:

1.  Verify that 192.168.129.1 is not already used as an IP on your Windows box.  E.g. VMware NAT also defaults to 192.168.129.1.
2.  On the Zaurus select USB - TCP/IP (advanced) from the PC Link application.  Enter any hostname you like but the IP should be 192.168.xxx.201, where xxx is 0-254.  Use the default of 129 if you can.
3.  On the PC select USB - TCP/IP (advanced) from the Zaurus Manager, enter the same hostname used in #2 and the exact same IP used in #2 (e.g. 192.168.129.201).

After you click OK your USB/IP windows interface should be enabled, if not, then enable it, then it will use DHCP can get a DHCP response from your Zaurus.  The Zaurus will give it 192.168.xxx.1 as the IP address.

Worse case, you can manually setup the IPs, but the IP scheme should be 192.168.xxx.201 for the Z and 182.168.xxx.1 for the PC windows interface and the settings in both PC Link and Zaurus Manager should be 192.168.xxx.201.  If you plan to use BT or WiFi for sync and routing you will need to setup manually.

Use ipconfig on windows and ifconfig on the Zaurus and verify that the IP settings are correct.

4.  Verify that you can ping.

5.  Sync.  Note if you use non-USB cable for sync you must select sync from Windows.

For routing:

1.  Use regedit and change Router from 0 to 1.  On 2000 I believe that you can do this without using regedit.  It is the same reg entry for XP and 2000.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParametersIPEnableRouter = 1

2.  Reboot.

3.  Use route add and edit /etc/resolv.conf on your Zaurus to set a default route to the 192.168.xxx.1 address and use the same DNS server that Windows is using.

P.S. BT = Bluetooth.  I use it as much as possible:

1.  BT/IP to sync my c860 with my notebook.
2.  BT/IP for direct net access when close to my notebook otherwise I use WiFi (it would be nice to find a BT/Wifi combo adapter, they did it years ago with PCMCIA/Ethernet/Modem, why not CF/BT/WiFi).
3.  Notebook BT to T610 mobile for sync.
4.  Zaurus BT to T610 for GPRS.
5.  Notebook BT to T610 for GPRS.

The only cables on my desk are power cords for the above devices and Ethernet for my notebook (I like the speed).
