Please help: new C860
« on: April 12, 2004, 07:42:46 pm »
I got my new C860 today and all i can say is \"wow\". However...it is a bit more complicated than I thought. I\'m a complete Linux rube and I was hoping my ease with all things Windows might make it a bit easier for me to learn...duh!

Anyway, I was wondering if someone out there could give me a few pointers...I started off getting a 512MB SD card and a wireless CF card. Both are working fine. I can log on to the internet and browse with Netfront. I don\'t like netfront. For one, I would like to install Flash so I can view these sites. As far as I can tell, I need to switch to another rom that has better support for this type of thing. I would like to install the new Cacko Rom posted here a few days ago - it seems to be popular.

First off though, how do I know which ROM I am using now? I can\'t even figure that out! It says Qtopia and Sharp ROM in the system info box.

Also, in order to get the files to my Z I will need to transfer them from my desktop. I understand I need Samba to do this (I guess). Where do I find these tools to connect to my PC/Network?

Thank you so much for any help/pointers you can give.

If you bought your C860 from Shirtpocket.co.uk it will have the original Japanese ROM converted to english.... Check out these forums for a way to backup the ROM....

I will let you know when I get my unit how to do it as I will ahve to discover for myself as well!

The C860 is a great piece of equipment! However, I would lose the original Rom and change it to the Cacko 1.21 Rom released last week. It is very stable, and eliminates all of the Japanese software issues that come with the 860. I have been using my 860 for 3 months graduating from a 5500.
Setting up the new O/S is extremely easy if you follow the simple instructions on the download page on this site. this is the link:

More software works with this Rom, and they have added some neat extra features.

Regards...  Bob

AFAIK no browser has support for a flash plugin. I compiled a stand alone X11 binary but this is probably not what you want, and it\'s for an old version of flash (ie. don\'t get your hopes up).

Thanks very much for your help guys!

Also, where can I find an english version of the software to transfer between my PC and the Z with the USB cable? I have the install CD that came with it, but it is all in Japanese. I\'d like to do a NAND backup to my SD card and transfer the file from my Z to my PC for safekeeping.

Thanks again.

Your Z can connect to your PC with no fuss if you use the USB drive feature.
Goto the settings tab, tap on PC Link, select \'Storage\' and use the drop down menu to select between CF or SD. Tap OK and you\'re done. Just plug into a PC, it should recognise it as a USB Mass Storage device, you may need your CD to install the drivers under windows, i don\'t know. Connects to my Linux PC like a normal disk drive, good stuff!!

Enjoy your new Z!!!
:-)

BTW I think the standard Japanese ROM is 1.20, I might be wrong, I flashed a new ROM within 12 hours of getting mine. I highly recommend the Cacko ROM if you want an all English device (and ogg music playback).

Also BTW, if you do use the USB drive, I switch it back to \'PC Link Setting\' after use or I forget and it can cause me problems later.
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.
