An insight on the Gemini manufacturing process
« on: February 05, 2018, 03:34:29 am »
A very interesting article has been published on Gemini Planet, a must read for everyone!

https://geminiplanet.com/2018/02/04/how-doe...facturing-work/

"(...) all of the units from the first few days, or even the first couple of weeks of production need to be rigorously and thoroughly tested. This is to find any last minute bugs or problems that may exist, or to discover any manufacturing processes that could be improved."

"This all means that right now there are probably only twenty Gemini units being manufactured per day, which could be slowed further by the available capacity of soak testing and flashing equipment."

"This all fits with Planet Computers saying that backers will still be receiving their units into April of this year. As production ramps up, only one in ten units is tested, then one in a hundred and eventually only one in every thousand units is extensively soak tested."

I don't think it's true. Just somebody trying to guess what is going on.

I have just received a reply from the author (Mike Halsey), he has confirmed me that Planet has checked the article and confirmed it to be accurate.

I'm sure he did, but I still have my (strong) doubts.

Pinch of salt required.

Yes, it's just a guess.  But it seems plausible enough to me, so I'm happy to accept it provisionally, unless/until anyone has any better info.

(And, eager as we all are to get our units, wishful thinking doesn't count as ‘better’.   )

Note, 20 production units were produced for CES. So I think some production issues are resolved before this mass production started therefore I think we can assume a good number of Geminis being shipped before Chinese New Year.
Previous PDAs - Psion 5, Psion 5mx, Ericsson MC218, Psion Revo, Psion 7
Now: Gemini PDA and Cosmo
