Gemini Keyboard Apps new name
« on: January 29, 2018, 01:21:22 pm »
I've been thinking probably time to rename GKA and move it to a github organisation so its not got my name stuck in it (gka is not available), just thought I'd see what other folk think? I'm mostly word-smashing Debian and Gemini.

Poll now closed - final results:
GKA - keep the same name    [ 2 ]    ** [25.00%]
Debini    [ 1 ]    ** [12.50%]
Gemian    [ 2 ]    ** [25.00%]
Essg    [ 0 ]    ** [0.00%]
Lssg - Linux Support Software for Gemini    [ 1 ]    ** [12.50%]
Other - suggestion as reply    [ 1 ]    ** [12.50%]
GeminiKeyboardApps    [ 1 ]    ** [12.50%]

So I'll take instigators privilege and pick Gemian.

I'm wondering, how will be this project released and distributed? Is the plan to release it within the distro which will be released by Planet, in case they agree to do so? Will it be available as separate packages, one for each app? Or is the idea to provide a complete distro with all the apps/enhancements included? In case this will be available as separate package(s), IMHO using a word-play between Debian and Gemini would be confusing, since from the name I would expect this to be a full distro. Here are some ideas for the project's name, with some combinations of the proposed names, what do you think? Personally, I like Gemini Linux Support Software the most.

Gemini Enhancer Software (GES) - Enhancer Software for Gemini (ESG)
Gemini Enhancer Software Suite (GESS) - Enhancer Software Suite for Gemini (ESSG)
Gemini Enhancer Kit (GEK) - Enhancer Kit for Gemini (EKG)
Gemini Enhancer Package (GEP) - Enhancer Package for Gemini (EKG)
Gemini Linux Support Software (GLSS) - Linux Support Software for Gemini (LSSG)
Gemini Linux Support Suite (GLSS) - Linux Support Suite for Gemini (LSSG)
Gemini Linux Support Kit (GLSK) - Linux Support Kit for Gemini (LSKG)
Gemini Linux Support Package (GLSP) - Linux Support Package for Gemini (LSPG)

A few quotes from various bits of the wiki:

* This project is focused on improving the linux side user apps so that we can remain within the Linux side all the time.

* The project is aiming to be delivered via an additional apt repository that contains initially the branched packages.

* It can also contain meta packages that can be simply created with equivs to pull in the full set of applications.

So its entirely unofficial, but as Gemini was always planned as an Android supported, Linux drivers only and then up-to the community to make it useful. I'm still hoping for other folk to help out and figured that having my name in the wiki url would be likely to put other folk off hence the idea for a nice, short, and available name for it.

I can't seem to edit the poll to add your suggestions as options?

Sorry, I have missed the mention of the additional apt repository bit, my bad. I'm now preparing a news item for the project, sorry for the delay.

You need to "full edit" the first post in this thread, the poll is attached to that poll. You should find an "[Add Poll Choice]" link in place of the (empty) seventh choice. Please let me know if you manage to edit the poll, if you still can't there might be a setting at the users' permissions which needs to be set.

Thanks, figured I should check all suggestions against availability so as to limit the number of options (two of mine weren't actually available). I guess voting GKA is effectively saying no one cares about my name being in the url.

Unfortunately as with 'gka', 'glss' reports 'Username is already taken'.

What about “Gemini Software Development” = GSD = Get S(tuff) Done?
dep

Atari Portfolio (yes, it still works and yes, I bought it new)
Libretto 110 CT (with docking station and all kinds of PCMCIA stuff)
And, now, a Gemini and, fortunately, a GPD Pocket

Voted for LSSG - to be clear, as Linux Support Software for Gemini and not Linux Support Suite for Gemini. Maybe these two should be split to two choices, since they share the same acronym.

I added it to the vote option, as first voter for that short name you get to pick the long version too. I also added a long version of GKA which is available.

[Note: Poll at time of writing is 3 for no change and 1 vote for each of four of the options to change, one of which is not possible]

This poll is a bit like the ridiculous British Brexit vote, except in that case as there was just two options so all the people voting for change of different types all counted together which won. In this case we we are stuck with no change, as not even two people want the same change.

I voted for GKA initially so the poll won't let me change my vote to GeminiKeyboardApps.  I prefer either of those because it's easy to remember and perfectly (specifically) named. The other options are too vague (IMO).
