Server outage, forum now back online - EDIT
« on: February 15, 2018, 08:24:33 am »
Hi,

as you probably noticed, the forum was offline for the past ~18 hours. This outage was due to a problem on the hosting side, and it has affected other sites on the same server too. We are still waiting for a statement from our hosting provider explaining the reason for the outage, but at least the forum is back online. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and thanks for your patience.

EDIT: Unfortunately it seems I spoke too soon: some pages still show an error when they are opened, and they are successfully opened only after 3-4 attempts. According to a post by one of the hosting provider's admin, the problem seems to be caused by recent Google Warnings about malware on some of the sites hosted by them, and by the software they are deploying in order to improve the security.

I can assure you that OESF is malware free: we have registered it on the Google Search Console a year ago, and it currently reports that no malware can be found here. I often check the Security status there to verify that no malware has been installed in the meanwhile.

The situation is anyway getting better, and I hope that soon we won't have any more problems. As before, thanks for your patience.

I'm still getting occasional HTTP 500 errors, and a reload brings up the page.

Now I also had a single 500 error, and a page with a couple of images not being loaded. I have the feeling that the server has still some problems only at certain times of the day, e.g. during the late evening hours (here on GMT+1).

Maybe the server is overloaded. Perhaps they applied meltdown and spectre patches and it's reduced the performance causing these errors?

It seems the problem is still there (at least I have trouble getting the pages to load, which also makes it difficult to write this post...).

It has been OK for a while, but tha last few days it has been acting up again. I don't usually get error-messages, the page just doesn't load. And even when the pages DO load a lot of images etc. doesn't!

Just thought you might want to know.

Hi, @varti has reported it to ibiblio in a trouble-ticket, and will chase them up about it if it doesn't improve.

Our hosting is with Ibiblio: https://www.ibiblio.org/about/
This is great as it's free, and also necessitates non-commercial use which means no adverts, the way we like it.

I'm still waiting for an answer from our host, I believe this issue will be resolved shortly, also since other projects hosted on the same server are having the same problems. Seems to be a certificatiosn problem, though I have seen that also non-secure pages are affected.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience; the pages will eventually load, though you'd need to reload the pages  a couple of times.

If the issue won't be fixed in a reasonable time, I'll evaluate the move to a new, temporary server.

Maybe I'm speaking too soon, but it seems that there are no more issues, at least for me.

Thanlks for the confirmation and for reporting the problem earlier. The ibiblio staff usually don't disclose what are the issues, but they usually fix them in a couple of days.
