I've been playing around with my new toy for a few days. The LED lights seem an interesting option. I've worked out how to sequence the lights, so far, in a simple fashion. But I can't find any way of associating a particular light sequence with a particular action, for example the arrival of an email, a message, or a missed phone call.Or even to demonstrate in front of an admiring audience!

Now there's a very good reason for that, Planet haven't worked out how to do it yet either, when they do they'll publish it but until then it's just a toy.

I think I have a solid method figured out, but have no way to communicate the idea to Planet.

All the LEDs really need to be is an audio graphical EQ display.  Pipe ring tones to the LED display, done.
Volume control for that 'output' is 'dimming'.
Every action associated with a sound event is now a unique light display.
Giving a contact their own ringtone instantly gives them their own light display.

If anyone works out how to make red lights scroll from side to side like the ones on the front of KITT, I'll be very happy indeed. Preferably with the relevant sound effect.

In the mean time, anyone can just use sounds to differentiate between emails, instant messages, and texts. Or specific callers.

Or just get a smartwatch if you want to see the notifications and even act on them.

I once asked, on another Android device, how one could assign different notification sounds to different functions, as a way to determine which function it was. I was told that there was only one sound that stood for all functions other than the alarm, and the 'phone. You could pick the sound, but not the event. If this is not the case, I'd certainly like to know how it can be done. Since it's Android, I'd expect it to affect all devices, in a similar fashion.

Android has for a long time supported different apps specifying their own notification sounds which take preference over the one set in system settings. For example, and as another poster suggested, I have different notifications for text messages, emails on a per-account basis, and whatsapp messages on a per-sender basis, ringtones per-caller etc. These are all set within individual app's settings dialogue.
