Screen durability and replacement
« on: May 08, 2018, 04:15:18 am »
I haven't got my Gemini yet - it should be arriving in the next few weeks - but I've had a thought about the screen.

I tend to be pretty rough with my phones and have dropped them a few times. Luckily I usually have a model with Gorilla Glass and a fairly strong phone cover so I've only ever broken a screen once (by sitting on it).

Can anyone who has a Gemini tell me how durable they think the screen will be in resisting shocks? There are probably not enough in the wild for any screen to have been broken yet but I'd be interested to hear how much punishment the screen can put up with. If someone has broken their screen (or taken their Gemini apart), how easy do you think it will be to source and replace the screen/digitiser?

I'm constantly using my phone so the leather protector is not an option for me, although I might get one anyway for transport purposes. As far as I'm aware there are no phone covers available that will support the opening screen and expanding hinge - perhaps there never will be for such a niche product. Can anyone suggect any alternatives?

I have seen mention of very thin glass protectors for the Gemini but haven't looked into it at all. My Gemini arrived yesterday and from having played with it a few hours a couple of observations:

-- I have not removed the plastic shipping protection film from the screen. It being much softer than glass, it is likely to more quickly show wear and scratches more quickly. So far, nothing, though in my limited use this is scarcely dispositive.

-- As I look at the design it seems to me that the screen is well protected from external damage. But grit could get on the keys and wear into the screen as it is carried. Whether this will be an issue remains to be seen.

-- I am more concerned about the finish of the outside of the case. It looks as if it could be scratched fairly easily. I have carried a Blackberry Q10 for years and it, with its fake carbon fiber finish, looks brand new (and its entirely exposed screen is scratch-free -- maybe I'm just not hard on phones).

-- The design of the Gemini is such that it's not well suited for protective cases. The little slip case that's offered is like to cause more accidents, from the gadget being dropped as it is removed from the case, than it prevents. If the Gemini proves sufficiently popular, someone will come up with multi-part peel-and-stick cases. I think it's posted here someplace how someone glued on thin carbon fiber. A good idea, but I would hate to try to make one myself.

Atari Portfolio (yes, it still works and yes, I bought it new)
Libretto 110 CT (with docking station and all kinds of PCMCIA stuff)
And, now, a Gemini and, fortunately, a GPD Pocket
