Gmail spell checking and security updates
« on: July 08, 2018, 03:47:29 pm »
Hi,

My new Gemini was waiting for me when i got home yesterday. I ordered it directly from the Planet Computers website just over a week ago so it look much less than the 2 weeks stated. So far I’m pretty happy but there are couple of minor issues that maybe someone here has already solved.

The first is that I don’t get any spelling corrections within Gmail. I do get a red line to indicate that a word is spelt wrongly so it must be able to find the dictionary for the keyboard language. (English UK). It also seems to work fine with other apps (such as Gemini notes app).

My second issue is that the security Android security patch level is still from November last year. I’m a bit annoyed about this as I specifically asked Planet Computers about this before ordering and the reply I received implied  regular security updates. I’m not too bothered about being on the latest version of Android, but really want the latest security patches. Having a device 7 months behind on security updates is pretty flaky in 2018. I have sent a follow up email to Planet Computers about this, but I was wondering if anyone has been given any info about security updates?

Welcome to the Gemini Guinea Pig Class of 2018!

Planet Computers new slogan is: Promises Made. Promises Not Kept.

They are involved to distraction with rolling out retail sales, securing new investors (congrats) for version 2.0 or whatever... and wholly understaffed in custo sservice / support and various updates departments.

I think devices from the second batch, before the Great Bricking Brickoff, had security patches from February 2018. That was fairly up-to-date, at the time of shipping.

Then for some reason, they rolled back the patch level all the way back to November 2017 with the latest firmware update.

Hopefully this means that they're just experiencing teething issues and we'll get back on the regular update schedule soon.

Thanks for the info.  For whats its worth I had a reply from support today to say:

Updating the security patch level is one of our current priorities and this will most definitely be updated in the upcoming firmware update.

I'll take Ifanafi comment on board and treat it with healthy  scepticism!

Snarky comment made mostly about promised by dates which have slipped forward several times.

Nevertheless, that is why Planet avoids stating by-when dates so as to mitigate everyone's consternation and under-delivering on whatever.

Cheers.
