Triple boot install
« on: June 30, 2018, 02:32:43 am »
Just thought I would drop a note about using and installing 2.1.4.14. First up, I have an x25, I don't know if there is any difference between x27 and x25 as far as sailfish goes.

Installation
Smooth, apart from displaying in portrait. I didn't set a pin code (hit skip) and completed the tutorial. The screen then flipped into landscape and all was good. I followed meganerds instructions to lock landscape and a few other things.

Network
Some people had reported problems with either 4g or wifi, but I had none. Connected immediately to my home wifi, and detected the sim. I could make/receive calls and sms with no issue. Haven't tried hotspot yet.

Software
Installed a few things including the open repos client, gcc and a handfull of terminal goodness. I installed all my contacts from the backed up vcf file with no issues.

Initial reaction
Wow. Just wow. It is smooth and very intuitive. The only thing I miss is some of the keyboard shortcts.

More later.....

So initiating calls works out of the box? Good to know. Does your phone go to 3g mode during calls?

If anyone figures out how to get keyboard shortcuts I would be very grateful!
My idea was to look for the system files that control the currently working hotkeys.

Since I am able to use FN + both volume keys to screenshot, and also use FN + C or FN +V to raise/lower volume I would imagine we could simply modify the file(s) for other functions.
I only looked once but was not able to locate these files just yet.

I haven't noticed the switch to 3G during calls, but in my case I hope it does. I was having VoLTE problems with android. I haven't had a failed call yet, either trying to make it, answering or dropping. I am on 2.1.4.14 - you are on 2.1.3.7 from memory. They claim a host of bug fixes, and both jolla and planet tested the build so I hope it works

Good idead about the shortcuts, I'll have a look for it too. I did a pkcon update and saw that a few gemini updates were available. They were sensor based (well that is what they were named). Maybe in anticipation of some planet utils for sailfish?

I'll keep you informed wrt keyboard shortcuts. I downloaded the jolla toolchain which came with the kernel headers so I can compile locally.

I must say though that I am liking sailfish. I probably put a lot of pressure on it, being the gemini's salvation and all  but it has really come to the party. OS3 will be a blast.

Update:
I thought I would try to use some USB devices. I installed mupen64plus and plugged in my joystick to the right hand USB port. All working. I plugged my hub into the left side, and powered the hub. The gemini wouldn't charge, but that is the same as android. I plugged my 3tb harddrive into the powered hub, and no problems. Sailfish can see the drive, and it is being powered by the hub. So, USB seems to be a go on Sailfish.

Battery:
I have been hitting sailfish pretty hard, and I reckon it will last somewhere between 8-10 hours continuous use. That is in the same ballpark as android. I haven't checked things like standby, as it hasn't been idle  Gut reaction is that it uses slightly more juice than android, but it is a full linux system, with proper backgrounded processes so I can live with that.

Browser wierdness
Ok, this took a little while to work out, as I am not a sailfish guru. When I look at oesf.org, the browser zooms in to the page and you can't scroll. After a lot of trying to pinch zoom in and out, it turns out that you can double click a component to zoom in, and double click to zoom out. By double clicking, you can get the screen back to full view. I am sure this is some sore of helper functionality, but it can be annoying. The only page so far that it is an issue is oesf.....go figure.

X25 vs x27?
I run one of the original x25 units, and have been trouble free in installation and running. I don't know if the people who are having problems are all x27, but maybe the dual sim thing is causing problems. If the sailfish port has been on the cards for a while, it may have been developed on an x25. I didn't think there was much different between them, but........

Keyboard
Just thought I'd mention that I had no issues whatsoever with the keyboard. I have a US keyboard, and perhaps that is the sailfish default, or maybe the country selection set the keyboard. All keys are working correctly straight out of the box.

Overall
I am liking sailfish more and more. It seems a really good fit for the gemini. A few hotkeys and it would be perfect.

Im getting a bit annoyed at the flashing process. The guide is all over the place, hints where to extract things, its a joke. Is there a decent guide showing exactly where all the files go/where you need to extract too etc.

I did the backup process. Got the ROM/PTM error. Went to my backup thinking Ill have to reflash (Luckly it had not even flashed it) Just had an omg my backup is corrupt / borked moment. Could not copy or move the NVRAM0 said it was corrupt!

Hang on in Linux you cant move or copy files without an extension says its corrupt. Renamed it I can move it , copy it .... and breath

Goodness knows what will happen this thing hits retail lol.

At least I don't need to recover it.

Okay I had another look just FYI the NVRAM0 permissions were set to Root Access only. No other user could edit it, copy or move it after it was created. I must have clicked on access folder as root out of desperation. Thats why I could move it by renaming the file.
