External Camera Focusing?
« on: July 05, 2018, 08:19:18 am »
Hi all,

I got my external camera module a week or so ago, plugged
it in and started testing...

As low rent as it is, it did a decent enough taking low res
pictures when lighting was good, but usually needed me to
manually tell it where to focus.  It's like 2008 on my G1
all over again.

But the most frustrating thing with the camera was when I
found my banking app seems to be utterly unable to take a
focused picture of a check for deposit.

Presumably the app is expecting android OS or the firmware
to handle the focusing??   If so, is this something that
Planet needs to fix in their droidOS or firmware ports?

Anyone know more about what's going on under the covers
here?

Thanks!

PJS

The only focusing issue I've had with the rear camera is in low light where it simply refuses to focus.  But if I force it to use ISO400 (or less), it will focus.

Good question. It seems to me thqt Open Camera does a betterjob to focus (clic on screen) than Google's app. Here's a pic I just shot in med resolution (focus on the area where car is):

While the problem with the lack of focusing might be circumvented if you game
the ISO settings or replace the camera app, it doesn't seem that will help when
a third party app is simply relying on the firmware and configuration built in.

In any case, I'll try my next phone deposit with the Gemini outside and see
if some blazing sunlight will get through this camera system.

Thanks,
