poweroff, reboot, pm-suspend, and pm-hibernate in DebianTP2

Background: I am a new Gemini owner running a dual boot with Android/DebianTP2. I have a lot of experience installing and running Debian on PDAs having previously owned a Nokia N810 (with a Debian chroot), a Nokia N900 (with a Debian chroot), a Viliv N5 (with a single boot Debian install), and a Samsung S6 (with GNURoot Debian).

I run my own setup based on twm. (I have been using Unix/Linux for 4 decades.)

On the Gemini, I have installed pm-utils. But (as root or with sudo) none of poweroff, reboot, pm-suspend, or hibernate appear to have any effect. If I issue any of these commands in a root shell  the machine does not poweroff, reboot, suspend, or hibernate. Sometimes it hangs until I press Fn Off. Sometimes it hangs until I press any key. But the machine never turns off.

Any ideas why and how to fix?

My first goal is to reliably turn the machine off to save battery when not in use. My second goal is to get some more efficient way than requiring a reboot at turn on, either suspend or hibernate. With my current twm setup, if I leave it running and close the lid, the battery only lasts about a day.

You need to use repowerd for this, none of the other linux utilities for power management work very well/at all

Wish this wasn't the case, it doesn't suit PDAs/laptops, seems to be more designed for phones. I want the gemini to be 100% awake when open, even when idle, and 100% asleep when closed, and it's a real ballache to make that happen with repowerd. It's a fairly complex state machine that fights against a binary lid=on/off system in many ways

Very interested if someone manages to get locking and suspend working without repowerd, as the screen brightness without repowerd problem is already solved

From memory : I was  using xscreensaver , repowerd and in the power management,  I've  enabled lid support  ( But selected to lock screen , because hibernate and suspend are problematic  ).
I 've tried hibernate without success.( nothing happens )  Suspend with success, but seems that it power off the gemini.( not suspend ).

Lock works really well . ( it also poweroff the screen ).  Also xscreensaver  works really well.
Unfortunately I am not with my gemini to test again  . I am traveling. Note : Debian TP1 with updates.
