Missing firmware updates
« on: January 22, 2020, 01:05:09 pm »
I just received my Cosmo and thought I'd update it the first thing I do. The "Latest Cosmo Firmware" page lists one released 11th December, and the recent campaign update mentions a "V19" that should have been released a few days ago.

However, the phone can't find any, and is as such stuck at "10292019-V15.<20191029_1401>". Region is Sweden.

Are they available to download manually and force update?

Same here. I'm in Norway and I was looking for a firmware upgrade as well, but I can't find one either.

I seem to be on V15.

You can try download V16 manually and after manual update some people reported that OTA worked again. V16 is here https://flare02.iofota.com/EASTAEON_FTPRO16...91209104700.zip download it, rename to Updatepackage.zip, place to root of your internal storage and select Local update in the update app.

For me it worked only partially though. I am now on V16 but OTA still does not work.

Would be really nice to have the complete, flashable, official ROM for download. Planet Computers can you hear us?

Since the official Digitime web site dropped off the internet (the DNS lookup still works, but the IP adress returned won't respond), perhaps their FW update servers are gone, too. I had a look that the adresses Ninjis analysis said were used to fetch updates. If I plug the first few of them into a web browser, I'm either getting no response or a default NginiX page, as if someone recently (re)installed the server, but hasn't set anything up yet.

I intend to try the manual update to V16 once I'm done hauling a 100GB+ backup (for work) over my Internet connection. Even if I can't get further than that, I'd like to get there, as my current firmware appears to empty the battery in less than 24H, even in flight mode, with no (non-stock) apps installed.

[Edit]: Thanks to Rasva, I'm now on V16, which allowed the CoDi assistant to install (painfully, as usual) the 1.1.1.13 CoDi firmware. Checking for Android firmware updates still gets stuck on "Checking", which may support my theory that the update server just isn't there (or doesn't respond). That would leave some of us stuck on V16 until some means to update further becomes available.

I've asked them directly when I had the same issue. If the app doesn't download a newer firmware you're not supposed to get one, apparently.

But they're promising V19 and we're stuck on V15...

Are they delaying it until they fix the vulnerability issue that was raised?

I don't think it's delayed intentionally. The opposite is the case: The vulnerability is supposed to be already fixed in V19. I just checked and now it hangs on checking for updated for me as well.

For those impatient (like me), you can manually update to V19. This is short overview how to do it under windows:

You need proper USB drivers (search for google usb drivers, or mediatek 1.0.8 drivers)

You need sp flash tool from here, as an alternative you can use fastboot method, but I prefer Sp flash tool. Sp flash tool provided by PC for Gemini will not work, it is too old.

You need full images for flashing from thread here

You need scatter file from same thread here
Important: do not use any other scatter file, but the one from this link.

You have to manually tell to sp flash tool where are the images located, especially boot (depends if you want original or rooted one, but rooting requires additional steps before you can flash rooted image)

The setting of Sp flash tool I used is attached as a screenshot to this topic. (as I see it now, I am not sure about lk.img, I think I did not flash it. I think it is kernel and that's surely still the same)

If you ever updated Gemini before, the procedure is in fact the same apart telling SP flash tool which images to use, if you are not failiar with it and you don't know how to use SP flash tool, please study related support page about Gemini flashing here

As a precaution you may also want to do some backups, at least NVRAM, for the proper address range you can look in the scatter file. What I did, I simply used readout function of SP flash tool for range from 0x0 to 0x11B000000 (this is where the CACHE partition starts, so this covers all "system" partitions, but no user data)

That's it.

Edit: corrected the screenshot of SP flash tool

January 29 update notice from Planet:

Dear Cosmo backers!

Here are the latest news from the Cosmo team...

Over-the-air Android firmware Update

We are aware that some of you have issues upgrading the Android firmware of their Cosmo Communicator. This is most likely due to a misconfiguration of the software update server, which will be dealt with top priority early next week when people will come back to work from their Chinese New Year holidays. Unfortunately, until then this issue is completely outside our control.

As mentioned in the previous update, we are also working on a new system to replace the current software update mechanism with an in-house solution, which will give us more flexibility.

A first software update prototype has already been built and in the next few weeks we will shape it into a full-feature product. When ready, the new update mechanism will be released as a normal FOTA update, so the update will be transparent to users.

In the meantime, please do not attempt to update the firmware using any other method as the update files may not be compatible with your Cosmo OS version and may cause your Cosmo not to boot or function properly.

Similarly, please do not attempt to use Gemini Linux or other OS images on your Cosmo.

Firmware updates just started working for me. I updated V15 => V16 => V19. So maybe Planet has gotten the OTA service back online.

I'm on Cosmo-9.0-Planet-01182020-V19.  For a week or two now, the wireless update tool has just been hanging , but after reading this thread today I tried again, and the tool completed its check, 'No updates available', which is nice.

Hi !
How to cancel codi checking update notification ?
Well, sorry,  I don't have solution for your problem. Nevertheless - I am using this thread to present my one:
My Cosmo had  founded and succesfully downloaded new CODI version, but there is no way to flash it on my Cosmo. When I try to do it, after several seconds it says  "Error updating cover display!"
An when I click on "Retry flash", after another several seconds the process repeats again and again.
I  would like to know if it is some way my fault, or - possibly - whether  possibly the newer CODI version exists at all. Because if not - and my  Cosmo logically refuses to flash the same one - it would be fault of he  system..
The common version of CODI running on my Cosmo is V.1.1.1.12.
Thanks anybody , who can help... PavelH at atlas dot cz
