Rear camera glass cover

Just to share my total and utter sadness  

I have recently received my Cosmo (after having been an avid Gemini user before). I am really happy with the device, however I recently discovered, that the protective glass cover for the back camera has come off, without me noticing (see attached photo).

I have not dropped the device or physically abused it in any other way – so I strongly believe that the used adhesive must have been too weak.

In any case; as the glass cover is missing, I would at the minimum need a replacement glass for it. In the meantime, I have covered the camera with tape in order to prevent excessive amounts of dust from getting into the unit.

Now, let's see, how fast Planet Computers are at answering such support requests.

I noticed since the moment I unboxed my Cosmo that the camera glass isn't very well affixed, at least on one side.  I've pressed it back down several times and it keeps coming back up on one side.  I've been pondering sicking it under my microscope and very carefully getting a little bit of glue into that seam to hold the glass in place better.

Edit:  I notice you are in Sweden.  I'm in Finland, so assuming you have the local keyboard layout on yours, our Cosmos are quite possibly from the same batch.

Given my recent experience, it might really be a good idea to make sure it doesn't come off. When looking at your photo and comparing it to mine, probably a tiny drop of superglue into the groove between glass and frame might be enough?

That is, if you make sure, that the glue stays outside of the innards of the camera unit AND if the superglue doesn't dissolve neither the glass (is it real glass?) nor the plastics surrounding it!!!

Don't really know anything about the materials used, so someone more knowledgeable about the chemistry of plastics might get acute urges to kill me when reading such ideas

Probably, I should let Planet Computers know, that there seems to be a problem that affects several units of this batch, when they reply to my support request.

That's what I was thinking as well.  Very carefully applying glue under just that edge would be fairly easy with the microscope, and it shouldn't really need to be anything fancy like superglue, because we don't really need (or want) a super strong bond here.  Just enough to keep the glass down would be fine.  I think a pretty simple adhesive would work well.

Not a bad idea.  I also received my Cosmo about a week ago, with the fin/swe keyboard (see what I did there? ), so we're almost certainly the same batch.

Also would be nice to know if anyone from any other batches sees this problem.

That's true. I was just thinking out loud, contemplating about my experience with trying to add adhesive on top of other adhesive. In such cases, superglue has become my universal choice

I provided Planet with a link to this thread and specifically asked on advice for those of us with loose (but not yet lost) glasses.

I did have a short mail-convo – and according to Planet, a replacement lens is already on its way to me. Amazingly fast service, I have to say!
However, have not yet received an answer about the advice or recommended choice of adhesive.

I strongly suspect they will say, "don't do that".     (And I haven't done anything yet.  I'll probably wait and see what reaction you get.)

Camera glass on my Cosmo is also asymmetrical, but just a little bit. Not so dangerous but anyway. Many parts of my Cosmo's case feel very chinese. Big gaps, wonky parts. I don't care too much about it but for $750 device it's ridiculous

Just to fill in the picture, my Cosmo camera cover glass also sits a tad proud of the plastic on the lens side, and, like Noppe, I'm in Sweden too, so yeah, it might be an issue with our batch, or even a general design flaw, as the image posted by Selig above, where the glass is missing, shows just how little room there is for adhesive on the right side of the lens.

Well, while I, at times, may feel something similar, perhaps it is rather a bit silly to compare the price of a niche product to mass market offerings of similar performance, as making a few thousands of something is a world apart from manufacturing millions, so, maybe, we should rather be thankful that the Chinese are able and willing to, at all, make such a low-volume product as the Cosmo possible, at that price. Imagine what it would cost to produce in Europe.

I have also a FIN/SWE cosmo and probably from same patch (locked just before Christmas, got mine at end of January) and my camera glass is solidly in the indentation. No such bulge as in Selig's picture. So it doesn't seem to be an issue with every unit. I guess I got lucky...

Same here also with Fin/Swe layout.

Cameras frame seems to be level, but glass over camera and flash isn't.

And when you look closely, same thing with rocker switch/fingerprint sensor. Frame looks like it's level, but switch is little bit tilt for other side. Phone answer and decline are working still Ok, so at this point it seems more or less cosmetic (hopfully).
