Oh and I cannot blame you :-)

I\'m not sure about that extender, never seen it before.

Is one for the Zaurus specifically, be careful though plugging 3rd party power packs in, only use the recommended batteries in it, low price too, you can find these ones on ebay.

I do not believe a 5600 battery would be suitable.

I did see a powerpack which ran for about 8 hours or so, but I cannot find it now and it was VERY expensive.

2 hours is more than I got with my 5500
Left Linux and Linux PDAs... sorry, got boring.  Switched to Mac.

Here are the two options I considered.
A: The DPS-9000+, made by digipower, is a rechargeable 7.2V battery, with connectors to almost any digital camera and every PDA, including a 5V voltage step-down connector; around 6000mah, I think. I haven\'t ever used or seen one of these, just pictures on the internet and some guy\'s website saying how he has one (search for zaurustuff in google and you\'ll find it.) On eBay, you can et one for $40-$45, but for ~6 extra hours of battery life, that\'s a pretty good deal.

B: Homemade external battery pack. Yeah, I suppose you could buy a $17 battery pack on the internet, but you can also buy a $2 battery holder at teh radioshack, get a fitting plug from an old unused AC adapter, or buy a plug from the previously mentioned radioshack for ]$1, solder it together, and you have youself a battery pack that will work fine for 1.2V batteries. For 1.5V batteries, connect an N4001 diode (also found at the shack) into your circuit.
The 1.2V NiMH batteries you will want to use in your pack are not too expensive. I got 4 2300mah batteries and a 3-hour charger new on eBay for $16 including shipping, and they work like a charm. You can add other features to your battery pack depending on how much money you\'re willing to spend, how much time you\'re willing to put into it, and how much experience you have with this sort of thing. It is possible to make a pack that uses 1.5V and 1.2V AAAs, AAs, 4/3A\'s, Cs, Ds, can switch polarity to charge the aforementioned 1.2V batteries from an AC adapter or a USB port, has many different cable extenders, velcroes to the back of your Zaurus, and has your girlfriend or boyfriend or husband or wife or favorite celebrity\'s face painted on the back. It\'s all up to you. I just made a 1.2V AA extender, and just recently I spent 2 hours on the way home from Six Flags watching Futurama from my CF card with the light on full and my extender did not even run out, not to mention the internal battery still being full. In addition to high-capacity NiMH AA\'s (don\'t use NiCads, they suck), you could also get some 4/3A size rechargeable batteries - they are only slightly larger than AAs and hold almost twice the charge. That path is further explored at http://www.tekprosystems/zaurus/ , which has some other cool Zaurus mods, including blue paint and a keyboard light. However, please remember that 2300mah 1.2V x 4 = 2300mah 4.8V, not 9200mah 4.8V. It took me a while to realize that.

So, basically, you can get 6 hours for $45, or 2.3 hours for $19 (plus another 2.3 hours for every set of high-capacity NiMH AAs you buy)

I hope all this info helps, and I hope you haven\'t fallen asleep listening to my incessant ranting

:-) LOL!

Your second option looks like the one I pointed out, it depends on whether you want one neatly made for you, plus you could zap it if you\'re not careful, not good if you love the Z. (I\'d probably make one though if I still had a 5500 coz I like to make/solder stuff)

We also do a bundle version if you don\'t already have batteries/charger.

According to our supplier, he has never had anyone complain using normal AAs (they say it works with AAs no problem), but being paranoid and having measured over 6 volts using normal AAs, happier specifying use with 1.2volt batteries only.

Charger is quite slow though. Never timed it, but looking at a day or so to fully charge the high capacity ones. Works well though.

Most lithium battery recharging circuits are designed to tolerate incorrect voltages as long as its not too far off.  I never had a problem charging my iPaq with 4 alkaline batteries.  Also, don\'t forget, regular alkaline only put out 1.5V when brand new, the voltage drops quickly with use, (NIMH is 1.2v until almost empty.)

What is the difference between the \"battery extender sharp\" and the \"usb powered battery charger\" in shirtpocket\'s bundle ?

Hi totoetlititi,
IF you are interested, I have a battery (Sharp EA-BL06) in original packing for sale.  It\'s brand new, I just used it a couple of times to make sure it\'s fine.  I have a total of 3 additional batteries and don\'t need all of them so I\'m selling one.
I had posted this in the For Sale section and I had put $30 (incl. s/h), however, nobody seems to be interested.  Let me know if you want it and if $30 sounds high, make me an offer.

DrWowe,
I\'ve measured AAs with intial voltage of over 1.75, starts adding up (1.5v nominal). Probably drops right down when you put a real load on it, but not tried that.

totoetlititi,
Full title for USB power battery charger is \"USB powered AA Battery Charger\". It charges your AA Rechargable batteries, so you can then use them in the battery extender. Just chaned the title by the way un the bundle page to make it clearer.

I don\'t know if this should really be a separate topic but it seems pertinent.

When using a battery extender device (say, the Semsons pack) with 4 NiMH batteries, how does one know when to recharge the NiMHs?  They (that is, Radio Shack) say to discharge the batteries fully between charges but there\'s no easy way to recognize when that is other than the yellow light on the Z (but that seems an inelegant way).

Tricky one that.

Most battery extenders do come with an LED, which should give some indication of charge.
Not sure if it would dim quick enough to be a good indicator.

I tend to just unplug it from time to time to see what sort of state the internal battery is in.
