Restoring C860 from NAND backup
« on: May 04, 2004, 05:16:01 pm »
Before trying out pdaXrom, i performed 2 backups on my c860. The first was done using the backup/restore program that was included from the factory.  The second was done via the Service Menus (NAND Backup).

I loaded pdaxrom on my c860 to test out and am now trying to restore from my backup.  Unfortunately, I can not enter the Service Menu screens.  When I try to enter the Service Menu (DM-ON), pdaXrom boots.

I can get into the (ON-OK) menu that I used to load pdaXrom, but not the Service Menu.  I tried performing a \"flash recover\" (CD-ON), but the lights just blink, they never go solid.  I am at a loss as to what to try next.  Luckily, pdaXrom still boots.

Any suggestions?

just to be sure.  do the following

1. remove back cover of Z
2. remove battery
3. remove power cord
4. wait 10 seconds
5. press and hold D and M keys
6. while still pressing, plug in power cord
7. while still pressing slide back cover release switch towards battery location

this should bring up the service menu.

Sorry if you\'ve already done this. Its a bit tricky - I know casue I had to learn it on my 860 a few months back

OK, I feel like an idiot.  I tried your suggestion and it worked.  I can\'t tell you how many times I tried to get into the menu unsuccessfully.  I don\'t know, but maybe I wasn\'t waiting long enough before putting power back in.  I have now successfully restored my c860 back to the way it was shipped.  Thanks.

I\'m in the process of trying to get my C860 back after having tried the OZ ROM. I got the service menus and chose \"Restore NAND flash\" on page 3. Now the device just says \"NAND Restore from CF\" and doesn\'t seem to get any further. I\'m unable to use the arrow keys and the OK/Cancel keys.

I have a CF card with the file SYSTC860.DBK on it inserted in the C860.

What gives?

Your Zaurus expects to get a slight push on the [ENTER] key to go ahead.

Good luck.

I tried that as the first thing with no result, and then I tried the arrow keys and the OK/Cancel keys. Now, after I shut the clamshell toghether, so the screen wouldn\'t stay lit until I got an answer, I have a blank screen and the Zaurus is not responding to *anything*.

I dare not remove the battery for more than 5 seconds, insert it again and try rebooting.

Why NOT? You said that you are already in the Service Menu & locked up so no harm can come from pulling the battery & AC power. The C860 NAND would be wiped in any case if/when you restored from the image on the CF. So what harm can a full power down do?

AAMOF, the BEST thing to do, IMHO. would be a full power down for an extended period (15 - 30 min), verify the image file on the CF against your desktop copy (you DO have a backup copy. don\'t you?) & trying the NAND restore again.

Suggest that you use the NAND restore from the Extra Menu rather than from the earlier menus, since that on has always worked flawlessly for me.

I don\'t know WHY, but leaving the C860 fully power down for an extended period usually seems to \"fix\" these obscure problems.

b2bpro -

I was doing this sequence, but learned by happenstance a slightly easier way:

1. remove back cover of Z
2. remove battery
3. remove power cord
4. wait 10 seconds (MAY require up to 15 -30 min sometimes)
5. slide back cover release switch towards battery location.
6. press and hold D & M keys
7. while still pressing D&M, plug in power cord

Works just the same for me but you can put the C860 down on a solid surface to press & hold the keys WITHOUT having to fumble it upside down to flip the battery switch! Getting the power cord in is also MUCH easier with the Z held down on a flat surface.

Also, if you are running & want to reboot to the Service Menu or D+B or what ever, you don\'t really need to pull the battery & reflip the switch. I just pick REBOOT from the popup menu then, right after clicking YES to confirm, hold down the necessary keys & (BANG!) my C860 boots D+M or D+B or etc, just the same as if I had done all the more complicated & cumbersome brohaha.

Try it. But, as usual, YMMV. (G)

Well - I had absolutely *no* idea of the state the device was in, because of the blank screen. On the other hand, apparently nothing could be done to wake the device - other than try to restart.

I removed all power sources for about 20 seconds, and was then able to reboot to OZ. Nothing had been done during the attempt to flash.

It seemed that both my CF cards were useless for this purpose. I took my SD card, formatted it to FAT16 and tried with that. There were no problems with the SD card.

Thank you for your answer.
