Minimo and Thunderbird released
« on: May 08, 2004, 09:02:46 am »
Today Minimo 0.1 and Mozilla Thunderbird 0.6 was compiled and released for the Sharp Zaurus series running the pdaXrom (mirror site) - these two new releases makes the Zaurus series one of the most powerfull pda\'s around. The Minimo browser is really fast and Thunderbird gives you a full-fledged e-mail (pop3 and IMAP) client right there in your hand (not palm), although Thunderbird is a bit slow on starting up. All you need is a net connection (wireless or fixed) and pdaXrom.

And speaking of neat little tools for your Zaurus and its wireless card, Kismet has
also been released - it makes a nice addition to your Zaurus when your are out on the road or just \"walking\" around in the neighborhood looking for security holes so you can report them ;-)
A quick FAQ on how to setup and use Kismet on your Zaurus can be found here or here.

The programs(ipk feed) and screenshots are located here (mirror).

awesome... great mirror site :-]

I tried minimo -- but I don\'t see the advantage over it.  I was hoping that it would render properly and a wee bit
faster, not having a lot of bloat -- but it\'s just as slow as firefox.  Therefore, I guess I\'ll stick with the fox.  I guess
this thing might have some draw for c700, but for 64mb ram devices, it seems firefox is probably best.

I seemed to get just about the same render speed -- ie: 15 seconds for www.cnn.com, etc., from both.

I just hope dillo gets better... dillo is rediculously quick to render.

ps: and thunderbird is a great addition.

Yes - the mirror host i awesome - lets see if slashdot picks it up and then it will get a real beating :-)

Strange - Minimo is alot faster in starting on my C760 than my Firefox - i will ask Sash later.

Minimo is faster for me too.  I think what makes it seem just as slow is that it will not show you the page *as it is loading*.  It loads the page in the background and then displays it after minimo is finished rendering the complete page.

You can change this in the config file (it\'s somewhere in ~/.minimo)

There are some other options that may help speed things up too.

Isn\'t the rendering engine the same for firefox/mozila/minimo (with respect to the version used)? I\'d thought that  what changes
is what is around the engine.

some tips for  rendering speed in firefox:

But the comments made me think that things might get worse.....

thank you for thunderbird.  that gets me one step closer to being able to migrate off the qtopia based rom.  i\'m still looking for some kind of solution for addresses and calendar.  does anyone have any ideas on some kind of server for calendar and addresses?

Rendering time in minimo seems to be pretty much the same as in firefox. The only thing that is better is a startup time. I\'ve chosen to stick to firefox for now, as it is much more functional. But thanks anyway, now we have something to choose from!
