I am thinking of trying Gentoo For Zaurus
« on: April 07, 2004, 04:16:17 pm »
This is the homepage of the Gentoo For Zaurus project. It is based on Cacko X11 Rom and The Emerde Project.

Any suggestions?

Features
Gentoo environment: It can \"emerge sync\", \"emerge package\", \"emerge -B package\", etcat, ...
Native compiler: Includes a native gcc environment for ARM based on the one from Cacko\'s site.
Cross compiler with distcc: Includes the zgcc-3.3.1 cross compiler for the main PC with distcc configured so the main PC is who does the actual compiling.
Complete linux system: You can install the applictions compiled over the environment before installing over the real system. Includes X11 so you can test applications on this environment instead of the real system.
Native ipkg format: You can install ipkg packages over the test system.
Conversion from Gentoo binaries to IPK binaries: We have developed a tool (tbz2ipk) to convert from Gentoo Packages (.tbz2) to Zaurus Packages (.ipk), so packages compiled on Gentoo can be used on other environments (such as Qtopia or OpenZaurus).

Try it. It will not harm your current ROM, as it is installed over NFS.

Ahh, and post your thoughts and experiences.

I finally got around to trying it.

Couldn\'t get emerge to work on most of the packages(masked dependency problems), and \'emerge sync\' always had something to whine about (I\'m not behind a firewall).  webrsync always froze on me a couple hours into the process.  Prehaps I need to forward some incoming ports on my router?

It did compile gtk-gnutella from the source though, which I found impossible to cross compile with the pdaXrom SDK.

We are working now on two branches of GFZ. Look at the wiki on gentooforzaurus.opensistemas.com. We have just set up a subversion system and we will soon have our portage tree there.

¡Hola Fernando!

Of course, it is still going. Only we at openSistemas need to pay salaries ;-) We have a big amount of (paid) work now, so we have few time for Gentoo For Zaurus.

I hope to have some time soon to release the new version and to announce the public subversion repository.

In the meaning time, everyone can work on the project. The wiki on gentooforzaurus.opensistemas.com is public, so everyone can write there. We are open to new developers.

The main goals of the project are on the wiki, so everybody can change them ;-)

About Stallman, hmmmm, he is too aggresive for me. I tend to be more moderated.
