Newby with very basic questions about C860
« on: May 20, 2004, 11:46:05 pm »
Hello All,
I am new to the forum and to the Linux line of Zaurii. I have had just about every other palmtop device and now I want to learn as much as possible about this new C860 I purchased from dynamism.com. However, I have a few real dumb questions right off the bat. Please bear with me...
1. For the life of me I can not find the handwritting recognition toggle. I don\'t have the little arrow next to the keyboard on the task bar. Is there a command I can use from the command line to get it there or something?
2. I have downloaded some programs and tried to install them using .ipk files. When I try, I get and error saying the filename has been changed from the orginal - Please change the filename to _name here_ and retry. That happens with any program I try to install. Changing the file name doesn\'t help.
3. Is there somewhere in the forum that discusses networking? I am wireless now, but I would like to actually add the C860 to my network.  Is that possible?
4. If I upgrade to the CRACO ROM can I still run the Qtopia software? What does the CRACO ROM come with.

Sorry if these are really dumb. Any Help would be appreciated?

for #1) try

http://www.zaurususergroup.com/index.php?n...viewtopic&t=816

for #2) click SEARCH at the top of any of the fora pages & use \"wireless\" &/or \"network\" as initial keywords. You can refine your searchs from there.

for #3) some TGZ type IPKs store the name of the TAR file being GZiped in the header of the archive. I would use

gunzip -l (path & filename)

You will probably have to add \".gz\" after the .ipk (gunzip on my C860 will not accept a null string -S suffix & adds the .gz by default)

If the IPK has no name stored, the same name as the IPK itself should be returned. If a different name is returned, try changing the .IPK name to that before installation.

#4) On that I can\'t help you. I\'m still running the Sharp ROM for the Japanese parts.

Try the how-to section on this forum.  You can get wireless and BT step-by-step how-to.

I\'ve loaded with Cacko rom and many other applications for standard Sharp rom and found no problem.

Hi roderickv,

cacko rom is base on original sharprom for modification.
so it supported 99.9% Qt software.

Thanks to all for your replies. I appreciate the help. I just wanted to up-date you.  First off, I LOVE this machine! I got it just in time for a business trip to the west coast I had to take and it was great! It really came it handy and I got a lot of positive comments on it - I may have even sold a couple.

Re. 1.  and 4. ) I bit the bullet and installed Cacko \"Elena\". It solved my handwriting recognition problems and I LOVE it! Thanks to all who put in the hard work on this ROM. You guys are great! I should have installed it right off but I made the mistake of buying through Dynamism and paying extra for the English conversion, so I was trying to live with the orginal ROM. If I had known Cacko was this great, I would have saved my money, brought one that wasn\'t converted and installed Cacko from the start.  I can\'t understand why everyone doesn\'t use it if they are not using x11/pdax ROMs.

Re 2.) I still can\'t install programs, even with the new ROM. The error I get now is, \"ipkg says something went wrong. Sorry.\" I made sure the directories in the path were correctly named without any spaces or illegal characters, I also tried renaming the file, but that didn\'t work either. Miami_Bob, I am not sure how to do what you suggested above in #3 sory. Any other suggestions?

Re 3.)  On the networking piece I think I wasn\'t clear enough. I have wireless working, have since day one. It was a piece of cake. What I want to do is to join my C860 to my domain, so that I can browse my server and other devices and stream MP3 music across the network. Is that possible?

Thanks to all of you again for all the help. Your support on this forum is the reason I felt confident getting a machine without an English manual.

You can download the smbmount off of the ZUG feed:

http://zaurususergroup.com/feed/smbmount_0.1_arm.ipk

That\'ll let you use samba to link a Windows shared folder on your Zaurus.  Then just play it

Try typing in

ipkg install [filename].ipk

in Konsole and see what the real error is.  That\'s really all that the package manager does anyways, but it hides the output.

$ ipkg install cacko-qtopiq-rom-hotfix_1.ipk
The following package were previously requested but have not been
installed:
error
Install them now [Y/n] ? y
filename - __.ipk

Downloading /__.ipk ...

ipkg_download: ERROR: Failed to retrieve /__.ipk, returning

error?!

uhh, try typing in:

ipkg uninstall error

If error is a package (which I doubt  ), then it should remove it from its \'previously requested\' list, and you should be able to continue.

Thanks again for the help, I appreciate it,
I ran \"ipkg uninstall error\" Here is what I got:

\"$ ipkg uninstall error
ERROR: unknown sub-command `uninstall\'\"
Then I got a list of legal commands.

So I ran what it was originally suggesting, which was:

\"$ ipkg update\"

Here is what I got when I ran that:

\"mkdir: Cannot create directory \'/usr/lib/ipkg/lists\' : Permission denied\"

Do you think it might be a permission issue?

OK. I just did a little research and found that I can not copy a file into home/tmp/ipkg/, I do not have permission.
It may be that I do not have permission to move or copy anything. Could that be part of the problem?

er, haha.. >_< my mistake.

ipkg remove error

Sorry, I always type in uninstall for some reason, and it always gives me that error.
To be sure, you should log in as root first.  You can do that by typing in \'su\' on the command line.  Then the $ prompt should change to a # prompt, and you\'re good to go.
