I agree with gester in his last post and the previous one.

the devnet is from *sharp* ... how good it is, is another point... but it is official.

I agree with this as well.

Although I also share most of the negative thoughts about the usefulness/reliability of devnet, anything that Sharp does to support the Z -- ESPECIALLY outside of Japan -- should be encouraged by us because it will benefit us in the long run.

Having said that though, I don\'t think we should put our eggs in the devnet basket.  The ZUG should be the site we rely on and anything that Sharp puts on the devnet should be backed up and mirrored on the ZUG (or somewhere).

But let\'s encourage Sharp in any case.

Ray,
I agree, by no means should ZUG be alowed to fall by the wayside, it is the beter site by a long way.  I think Devnet would serve the corprite development comunity very well however.  Given that the forign market suport by Sharp is loosely backed by the \"Head Office\" at best it is very unlikely that devnet will ever be able to provide the level of comunity suport that ZUG does.

On the other side of that coin, there are things that we all want Sharp to play nice with, like opening up the PIM apps.  Sharp has made it clear that they are not going to make that code publicly availabe.  Do we want as a comuinity to ask the Wonderful admins of ZUG to take on the responsabilty of hosting such propiratery code?  If Zug did host such things and somthing went wrong it would be the end of ZUG, not worth the risk in my opinion.  If Devnet were to become a place for \"Legal Developers\" to get suport on the closed parts of Sharps code we would all benafit emencely.  And really would some world class comercial apps for the Z be a bad thing, it would make it easer for business to justify being a licenced Sharp developer.

Gester,

I didn\'t mean to imply that the ZUG should host anything that isn\'t legal.

OTOH, I think that virtually anything Sharp posts publically on the devnet is probably fair game.  If they did post the source for the PIMs, I see no reason why it can\'t be mirrored (unless they explictly forbid this, which seems unlikely if their intent is to make it public).

Any support that Sharp provides via devnet is A Good Thing.  Encourage them.

But keep fealty with the ZUG.

Ray,
I think I miss stated myself, I wasent implying that ZUG ever would host anythign that they shouldent.  I dont think Sharp is going to show the code for the PIM apps and maybe other things publicly.  however it wouldent suprise me to see a section of the site for \"registerd\" (read \"paid out the A**\") users who would have access to said locked code.  I dont think this is somthing that ZUG wants to be responsable for, to much work and to risky.  Sory that all came out wrong the first time.

Errr..... That\'s just the date they were uploaded, nothing to do with the age of the apps.

Sharp did post API specs to their DTM db
http://community.zaurus.com/project/showfi...0&release_id=75

Personally, I am very grateful for Sharp producing linux handheld devices that run Qtopia. I wouldn\'t have my current job, if not for Sharp supporting the dev community and having the Sharp Developer Symposium that they did in the beginning.....
