Xqt questions
« on: June 13, 2004, 07:55:53 pm »
Well, I\'m not sure where to post this, but since it\'s technically under the Sharp ROM, I\'ll throw it here. Having _used_ xwindows in the past, but never administered it, these questions may be a bit newbish - so please, be gentle...

Some questions about Xqt:
1) Having tried Xqt with both blackbox and fluxbox, what\'s with windows that dont have proper scroll bars?! Is there a way to specify automatic scroll bars for any window? For instance, if data scrolls by in xterm, I\'m SOL for reading the stuff that just whizzed by...
2) I cant seem to save window positions, etc with neither blackbox nor fluxbox. Fluxbox seems to have the capacity to do it (right click on the bar and choose \"Remember...\") - but selecting any of the secondary options (Dimensions or Position) does not seem to do anything. Am I missing something here?
3) Whenever I iconify any running applications, no icons are displayed. They\'re listed as icons in the Window list, but there is no visual representation...
4) I like to use the pdaxrom version of nethack, but while I like it MUCH better than the QT version, there\'s a lot of oddities about it. Firstly, none of the scroll bars work properly - trying to drag them with the mouse is an exercise in futility... they only seem to go one direction (down or right). As well, any text window in nethack comes up with no scroll bar, which make text longer than the screen impossible to read (try it with the extended help to get an idea of how it looks).

Much appreciation for any tips for any issues above.
Yz

Scroll bars are set application-by-application.  You will need to create an .Xresource file in your home directory and set up the way you like.  Start with an .Xresource from another Linux box.

That is a "feature" of blackbox and fluxbox, however fluxbox in the bar at the bottom of the screen does have a label for each window.  Also with fluxbox alt-tab works to switch from window to window.  Use fluxbox.

Hah, the funny thing is that I found this post today while looking for another and decided to throw the "Please move to Xqt forum" label in there without actually reading it.... Which is somewhat embarassing, as I already figured out how to add scrollbars by using an .Xresources file (which, unfortunately, shows the same problem like xnethack where you cannot slide the bar up, only down...). Anyone know a solution to this oddity (cannot slide positional sliders "backward", ie. up in a vertical scrollbar, or left in a horizontal scrollbar)? Thanks for the tip though.

Thanks for the info about blackbox/fluxbox.

ps. I guess this post should still be moved over to the Xqt group...

I can tell you the reason: Those standard X scrollbars from before the times of GTK, QT etc. are made for use with a three button mouse. Left button scrolls down/right, right button up/left, middle button moves the scrollbar. Don't know if you can change this though.

Thanks cybersphinx, that's explained it! That is some bizzare stuff. I dont ever remember having to do that with X, but I really only started using X in late '91, which isnt all that long ago...

Thanks. Now I have to figure out how to use the middle button...
