Japanese Laguage Proficiency Test vocabulary - all
« on: July 07, 2004, 08:11:10 am »
I've compiled the complete (4 levels, nearly 10,000 words) vocabulary necessary to pass the Nihongo Nouryoku Shiken (Japanese Language Proficiency Test), in the form of a Java application usable on the Zaurus SL-Cxxx series. The IPK package, snapshot, download (less than 80 ko) are all on this page: JLPT vocabulary application page.
Have fun.

Thank you, certainly a nice program.  And just in time :-)

Just a few things I noticed:
the run_jlpt script must be executable on my c860
the fonts are too tiny for a 640x480 display

Ok, I chmod'ed +x the run script. Strange, it works on my C860, though, if there was a problem, I should have bumped into it in the first place

Sorry for the tininess of the button font, but I preferred to leave more space for the main display. If it's really too much an inconvenience, and if you really insist, I will change it, but once you have pressed those buttons twice, you ought to remember their functions without having to read them again and again, I suppose.

As for december 5th, Gambatte ne

Well, I had the impression that there is plenty of space for the main display...

One other funny thing: the program starts as a small (and movable) window covering about 1/3 of the screen.  When I switch to another application and back again the window is enlarged to full screen mode (and then the buttons look somewhat empty with the tiny font...)

It's not possible to mark the text in the main display.  Might be nice for lookup in a dictionary of one's choice.

Ok, I enlarged the buttons font by 50%. As a result, in default mode, a few words may be too large for the display.

As for the words translation into english, don't forget that JLPT is before all a japanese language test, in japanese, so you'd better get used not to see the words translation together with their japanese form. That's an aspect of training. Neithertheless, if I've got time, I will make another version with more information associated with words, such as sample sentences, or even a definition, written in japanese of course, for example.

Thank you very much.  It really looks nice know.

When I said that I would like the text in the main text to be markable I didn't imply that your app should provide the translations.  I just want to do cut and paste, and translate with a dictionary of my choice (English is not my native language).  However, should you decide to include the translations you could just implemented it in the same way as the "Kana" button, i.e. you see the translation only on request.

BTW, it would be nice if the app remembered the current JLPT level.  Speaking of levels: do the higher levels include the words from the lower levels?

Just one more thought regarding translations: as simple as it might be but just taking the translations from EDICT is probably not a good idea.  EDICT provides a rather unordered and sometimes pretty longish list of words not necessarily all words useful for the JLPT.  It would be nice to have the word lists from the usual tudy materials but I have never seen such a list freely downloadable...

Anyway, thanks a lot again for your wonderful app.

I see what you mean...  Ok, I made a new modification : the current word is automatically copied to the system copy/paste buffer.

Now, on the Zaurus, all you have to do is to open your dictionary and directly paste into it.
Hope this helps.

This actually works really well in conjunction with the C-x60's built-in J-E dictionary and it's Popup_Caption feature.  I run the JLPT program in one half of the screen, and have the Popup window in the other half.  Since the JLPT prog copies the current word into the clipboard, if I need a def., I just tap on the dict's tray icon, and up pops the definition.

Obvious, maybe, but I found it handy.  Thanks for the great app.

Hi, I downloaded the JLPT for revision but when I clicked on it, it does not start up at all.  I'm on C860, ROM 1.4, Personal Profile v1.0-fcs-b25. Have been searching for info regarding such errors but no avail.  Would really appreciate if there are directions to rectify this fault.  Thanks.

Muziket:

Did you try running it from the command line? If not, try it, and see what error messages you get; it might give you a clue as to what is wrong.

If you're not sure what command to run, try opening the script file that the icon for the program calls. I would check for you, but I do not currently have it installed on my Z.

Hi thanks for your tip. I tried running on command line and realized that the path in the script was written for evm and plus it was pointing to the wrong path.  No wonder it didn't work.  Got it to work finally. Yippy, now can revise. Thanks.

Great program! Any chance of getting the source code?

One of the things I find it is missing is some sort of intelligence in picking out which word to display next. It would be nice if the program could remember which words the student knows well and presents the ones the student doesn't know well more often.

What fonts/sizes are you using for the kanji?

I managed to get it working on the 6000l, but can't get the kanji to display (the hiragana displays fine).
