So 0.7g can read secure Mobipocket files directly without any offline conversions?
Absolutely *NOT*.

It can read "insecure" mobipocket files without conversion. This is sufficient for Baen, Memoware and Fictionwise multiformat books but not for any DRMed files.

BTW, the official 0.7g release is imminent - I'll announce it here when it goes up at my website.

OK. I shouldn't have let the earlier discussion get my hopes up.

I take it the trick mentioned above about massaging MS .lit files won't work for Secure MS Reader format?

Is there a Zaurus Linux reader for any of the popular secure/encrypted ebook formats (Mobipocket, Adobe, MS Reader...)?

(I note Mobipocket has a Linux version of their reader available for download, but you have to choose from platform-specific package files with nothing explicitly for Zaurus or ARM ('it runs on any platform as long as it's PalmOS').)

If you have a registered version of Microsoft Reader than you can use Convert Lit to remove security restrictions (unless you live in USA or UK where downloading or using the program is illegal due to your screwed up copyright laws - even knowing the program exists can get you sued).

You will need the to download the windows version to get the program that extracts the keys.txt file then you can copy that to any machine (including the Z) and convert lit to opbf (basically html, xml and jpegs) Opie-reader will happily read the html files.

I have posted the clit-1.8 version in another thread (https://www.oesf.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=5845&hl=convert+lit#)

Remember it's illegal to use in the USA and UK even for Lit books you own.

For ROMs based on Qtopia 1.5 (Sharp, tkcROM and any other ROMs based on the Sharp original):

Thanks for your great effort.  Keep it up!

There's an issue with the 0.7f file for Sharp Rom.  I downloaded it from the link but it can't open after installation (either no response or a forever exploding icon).  0.7c works fine, though.

There are a few devices which have problems with having the codecs in separate files but it seems relatively rare and I haven't found any real pattern as to which devices will and won't work. When I do the final release I'll try and remember to do a "static" version as well which will include all the codecs compiled in. If you have any problems with the normal version then it is worth trying the static version.

In the Mobipocket Reader download page for Mac/Linux, you can download the Reader for PalmOS and Symbian devices.
For PocketPC, you can use the Mobipocket Mobile website.

Not very helpful - this is a ZAURUS forum, or hadn't you noticed.

So that makes them completely pointless - unless you mean that you aren't allowed to try and read them without having the mobipocket reader application   . Even that isn't true for everywhere in the world.

If you are a representative of Mobipocket, how about doing something constructive like telling your bosses that there is a market on linux based PDAs for the reader - or even providing a closed source plug-in for opie-reader so that people can read the books they paid for on the devices they want to. I'll provide the hooks and you could even sell it as it wouldn't have to be compiled in.

If you are a representative of Mobipocket

Those posts seem a bit formulaic. As you pointed out, they don't seem to know what this forum is about. Is it possible that the new forum member "Mobipocket" is just a robot that trawls forums for posts about Mobipocket, registers itself, and posts these messages automatically?

Hi all,
Thanks for the opie-reader 0.7f and g, Tim. A lot of my mobipocket files and even some of .chm files are opened. It does a magnificent job. But there are problems in my ssytem. I have  SL-5600  PXA255 with Zynergy ROM. In 0.7f after I have closed uqtreader, the icons of programs opened resides on taskbar evenif they are closed. And usually does not give permission to reopen the programs so Zaurus needs a reset.
In 0.7g after I close the opiereader it does not reopen until  I reset the Zaurus.
I thought to try 0.7c but it does not open the mobipocket files which could be opened by 0.7f and 0.7g.
Meanwhile is it possible to provide a password protected version for our private documents.
Thanks for your work

I've not tried the Zynergy ROM so I'm not sure what is happening. If you have fast load turned on then it may be worth turning it off but otherwise I can't think of anything specific causing this behaviour.

It may be worth trying the statically linked build when I do a proper release.

Also, with your current release try running it from the command line. If you have the version for the standard ROM type uqtreader and the prompt - if you have an opie version (unlikely) type reader at the prompt and then let me know if you get any error messages.

I'm not quite sure what you need for password protection but I don't really want to put DRM into opie-reader (impossible since it is open source) so you probably want something more like encryption. I did get your e-mail but it arrived when things were really hectic so I forgot to reply - I will reply, now and we can discuss what you need - sorry about the delay.
