which ROM to use?  Hi Guys,

Pretty much a newbie even though I have owned a zaurus for a while (taken a back seat).  Can anyone advise which ROM to use?  I don't really want to piss about to much, just want something that works.  OZ many moons agao I gave up on as I found myself always tinkering to get working.

Any advice would be great.

Take Care,

Jamie

That's a straight and clear answer!

I'm going to have a SL-5500 pretty soon, so I'll surely follow your advice, but uhmmm... Could you give some motivations why and/or comparisons with the alternatives?

My thoughts entirely my friend. Looks like a rom image maintained by someone who has update from the OZ feeds?

It's a nearly (minus SD driver which is unfortunately binary only) complete open source ROM with a writable root file system - hence you can install what you need and uninstall what you don't need.

It's based on the successful OpenZaurus 3.3.6-pre1 releases with some bugfixes and an updated Opie release.

As for a general comparison of OpenZaurus vs. SomethingElse, please read the archives - they're full of discussions about that

Mickeyl,

looks like it needs a zImage though?

I'd guess that you can get one from here: http://www.openzaurus.org/official/experim...e1-2.4.18-gcc3/

Wait for confirmation, but....

Choose your memory type, and your model and rename to zImage, etc.

So where does one get OZ3.3.6 pre1?  OZ website only says 3.3.5?

Yes, since it's a OZ 3.3.6 based ROM it works with the same kernel - same as  SharpROM derived ROMs need a SharpROM kernel.

See my link above.

However as Mickeyl says, you can just flash the filesystem (initrd.bin file) and it will work with the current (assuming you have a Sharp 3.xx ROM) kernel.

Hmm, the experimental part puts me off.  I dont want a load of messing about to have a working Z.  Think I may continue to look around unless anyone else has further comments.

Thanks for you time guys,

Jamie

I recommend the CACKO/CROW ROM.  VERY similiar to sharp with the big difference being os/home is on SD card and non volitile.

Very compatible with Sharp 3.10 apps

Great for:
Movies, games, music, pim, etc, etc.
"You Shall Not Pass"
....Gandalf, Lord Of The Rings

Pocketop and Targus IR keyboards

Hi it is BatFink here, now registered though as frenchja just to confuse you

Many thanks for the advice though I dont have a SD/MMC card   I do like the look of OZ, so I suppose this would be a factor going back to an aged looking UI as Sharp.  Am I just being fussy?  Just want a snazzy look UI and a stable rom so I can use the damn thing

Is there any other benefits of going to Cacko/crow aparty fromSD card thing?

Take care,

Jamie

OZ is certainly not old, it's far snazzier than the Sharp ROM. It's also pretty stable (I've not had to reboot my 5500 in a long long time).

Anyway, you've nothing to lose, it doesn't do any damage to flash from time to time (unless you plan on giving your Z to your great-great-great-grandchildren that is ;-)
