Hi, does anyone know where to get a copy of the japanese dictionary from the c760/860. I think there were 2 files,japanese-dict_1.0_arm .ipk file japanese-support_1.0_arm .ipk file, that was extracted out last time, but all the links appeared to have been taken down.

Managed to get it out of a rom and was testing it on a C750. However it doesnt run, and from the prompt, the program just exit without showing anything. The files needed are bin/sljisho, pic/sljisho/* and the dictionaries right? Does anyone had any experience with this?

Have you tried javadict? Find it at ZSI.  Works great on my SLC750, but the fonts are a bit small.  Should be just perfect on a 5X00 zaurus.

Thanx. In the end I settled for zten using the edict and gene95 dictionaries.

I highly recommend FOKS if you are a beginner or interemediate level Japanese learner.

It include edict, edict-name, life-science and some others, but has a highly flexible kanji lookup which is great if you don't know the exact reading of a compound but know at least on on/kun yomi of at lest one kanji.

I had previously installed the foks dictionary, but have since removed it from my Zaurus. It is an overbloated dictionary file that is more than 3x the normal size of a regular J-E/E-J dictionary. The extra size is not owing to any useful dictionary data, but rather because it includes an immense number of references to assist those who might incorrectly search for a word. The end result is a lot of file space is consumed referencing mispellings to correct words. I did not find that this helped me at all in looking up in words. There is a edict version of the japanese dictionary available online in the epwing format that does not include the foks garbage references.

Yep, it is huge (more than 10 times the size of edict if you compress both) the extra space mostly taken up with extra references designed to help people who don't know the correct reading (or have a tendancy to get readings wrong). Whether this is usefull for you or not will depend on how you use the zten and your level of Japanese. I'm still trying to decide whether the extra space is worth it - especially as I can draw the kanji I don't know the reading of in CRIM or kanjinirvana.

It's main advantage at the momoent is that it contains LifeSci and edict name dictionary - neithert of which I've been able to get copmiled in epwing format.

I trust Stubear and the others have seen the free EPWING format dictionaries that are available at Vector. I have most of these installed on my Zaurus, and they work great with zten.

I also bought a commercial version of a Windows Kojien CD-ROM in EPWING format and am able to use it too with zten. I am waiting for the new 5th edition of Kenkyusha's wa-ei daijiten in EPWING format that is scheduled to be released later this month.

Hmm, is there any way to convert ebdic files to epwing, i.e., eng-french, eng-german etc? I prefer the zten lookup and feel. Its also quite a bit faster. If theres a way to convert the dic files to text, i think its possible to recompile them into epwing dictionaries based on the experiments i had with trying to compile a small dictionary on my own.
