Newer versions of Qtopia on a Sharp based ROM
« on: September 08, 2004, 10:15:07 am »
Just curious if it's possible to get an update to the version of Qtopia on a Sharp based ROM?

If it is, how is it done?

I hear there is a compatibility library knocking around that lets you run Qtopia 1.6 libraries on the Z but it's pretty standard that all Zs have 1.5 - apart from OPIE which is intending to go for simulating a later version.

I think most implementers are a little bit cautious that a later version of Qtopia may introduce some compatibility issues. I know from playing around with OPIE on iPAQs before I got my Z that I much prefer to have stable Qtopia, as old as it is, than a bleeding edge set of libraries which I experienced many compatibility issues with. I've done quite a lot with my Z and have not experienced one Segment Violation

It would be great to have a version which you could use the latest Trolltech Designer application with that lets you code directly against the slots that you implement rather than the 1.5 one which is fairly crude and only lets you design the GUI (you have to glue the code on afterwards) - but that's a development issue and it's probably better to suffer that set of tools in favour of keeping a standard GUI base.

I did some compile test of Qtopia 1.7 a while back for my c700. I had a decent rom working. I used the OPIE patches (OZ ones too) to patch against it. Well the result was not that good thought. I was able to boot and see the GUI, but my touch screen was messed bad, everything was slow as hell and was bugged. I never had time to redo any test thought. There was a lots of work to be done so I didnt wanted to made a big project of it  It was more experimentation !

But, I believe its possible if someone take time to hunt down a couples of the problems I had, etc.
