Thanks Mickeyl but it has been ten years since I played with X11 seriously
It will take me a few months to get up to speed!
I had better leave it to XorA

I am also interested in helping out with that (x11/gpe). I have a C750.
I have just setup OE and I'd like to try to help out.

Congratulations to everybody involved for their hard work (is there a means to donate?).

Have C860, I'd be up for giving it a go. I can't build my own image at the moment as OE seems to grind to a halt after 1100 packages, eat all my swap then segfault :-( This was with 1.5Gig of swap.

How much extra RAM should I be buying, I have 512Meg in the machine.
I compile OE with 1GByte of RAM and i don't see a lot of swapping.

Well I've just ordered another 512Meg DDR stick, so I'll see if I can compile then :-) Otherwise Im wasting this Athlon64.

I got impatient last night, found a GPE image from a week ago, or so, and flashed it on my 760 several times prior to Mickey's post.

I can confirm that GPE defaults to the wrong rotation and the display is hosed but I'm too ignorant to fix the problem.

I had to reflash to my normal setup.

I managed an opie image on a PII-400 with 64MB RAM - took 5+ days though. lol

Okay, I uploaded the current state of gpe to the oz 3.5.1 images directory.

Send patches to oe@handhelds.org

I know it's not a big deal, but the website is still saying that the testing release is 3.3.5 rather than 3.5.1 - Just thought I'd mention.

Mickeyl:
Tried to flash the GPE image on my C750, looking if I could be of any help. On reboot, after displaying the OpenZaurus logo and loading a bunch of drivers, I get a black screen and nothing happens. Am I missing something here?

>>Edited:
Building my own GPE image using OpenEmbedded as I speak. Nice piece of work! Actually, I tried building an image before using tools and info scattered all over the Net. Hardly doable, but seeing OpenEmbedded at work, it becomes quite easy at once. Just have to be very patient after typing "oemake gpe-image"

Cortez please let us know if it works. I have a new C750 I need it for security audits and would like to be able to use all the irongeek.com tools on it. If you know of a better rom for this that will work on a C750 please let me know.

After 9 hours of downloading, unpacking, configuring and compiling the process of building a GPE image with OpenEmbedded failed. It seems that 5Gb free space is not enough, so I guess I have to clean up my system a little

Ahah, fixed it so I can compile OE on my system, I was using fedora core x86_64 and that seems to have some "problems" dropped back to i386 build and OE suddenly starts working as expected.

Have to try x86_64 again when FC3 is released.

Ok, gpe on C860, I have it running, I have it calibrated correctly. I deleted the /etc/xcalibration.conf file and restarted X. This meant the X version of calibration ran and correctly calibrated the screen. My mouse now works :-)

The keymap doesnt contain any fn+ keys.

When I rotate to Normal orientation I lose the matchbox bar at the bottom of
the screen, I am guessing it is being bumped off the screen by the resize.

I am just thinking aloud here to help others, here is what I changed the /etc/X11/Xinit.d/11zaurus file to to get orientation working the right way round for the C860

Code: [Select]
#!/bin/sh

if [ -z "`which chkhinge`" ]; then
   # probably not a zaurus
   exit 0
fi

chkhinge -e
if [ $? = 12 ]; then
   xrandr -o right
fi
