C860 OZ3.5.1 Suspend/Shutdown prob+partition flash
« on: September 28, 2004, 05:32:10 pm »
Dear All,

I have been getting by with the Cacko rom for some time now, however I was dissapointed by the shortage of apps/age of apps available and the inability to sync with my desktop.  I used to use OZ 3.2 on my 5500 so I decided to give 3.5.1 a spin on the C860.

First impressions where good - it looks great - there are plenty of apps and it syncs with my desktop (Qtopia 1.7 on SuSE 9.1) no problem.  However I have hit a 'stopper' which is the suspend/shutdown problem.  If I suspend the system with the on/off button - or shut it down - which I thought would get around it, the only way to get it back is to hard reboot (remove battery).  Any ideas workaround ? I have seen this mentioned in passing in other threads but no solutions. The system must be really upset because not even the charge light comes on when power is connected !!  Without the suspend/resume it loses the instant on feature of a PDA and becomes more of a traditional laptop i.e. have to wait for boot it up whenever you want to use it.

The other problem I have of my own doing is I repartitioned my internal flash for Cacko which seems to be causing a prob to OZ in that System info shows only 30Mb total available.  How do I need to repartition flash for OZ - is it just one big partition ?

Any Help appreciated :-)

Setup :-
C860
1Gb SD
512Mb CF/Prism CF Wifi
OZ 3.5.1 (hopefully ongoing ?)

im thinking about going to 3.5.1 from cacko on my 860 but was concerned about the resize partition as well. Is that causing a problem for you?
whats the best way to go from cacko to oz 3.5.1?

Before going to OZ 3.5.1 I would definately do a backup of current rom i.e. a NAND flash backup.  This is written to a CF card and allows you to recover your flash to exactly how it was at the time of the backup.  A great way of backing out a ROM update that went wrong.

If you need to know how to perform a flash backup/rstore see this link.

Full details on how to repartition your flash are given at the ZUG Cacko Rom download page.

I finally gave up on OZ 3.5.1 this morning and went back to the Cacko ROM, by doing a flash restore - this was flawless and took me back to where I was a few days ago without having to reinstall loads of applications.  I had also previously backed up my SD card, which I restored this morning, so it took about 1/2hr all in to get everything back !!!

By all means have a look at OZ 3.5.1 its really nice - however because of the shutdown problem I found it unsuitable for everyday use.  I am not complaining as a) it was free  it is an unstable release - no one claimed it was stable.  When 3.5.6 comes out which I believe will be the next stable release, I'll be at the front of the queue !

off topic : I also managed to overcome my major gripe with the Cacko ROM today by getting syncing working between the C860 and Evolution using Multisync.  Tonight I hope to flash OZ 3.2 onto my old 5500, sync that with Qtopia Desktop which is where all my PIM info is, then hopefully sync that to Evolution via Multisync then back the other way down to the C860.  Its longwinded but much quicker that typing eveything in again.

yeah i have a 5500 too but its just sittin on my desk. Since i got my 860 i just cant seem to find a use for it.  I loved oz on in and I think id like oz on the 860. but i suppose i will wait for the next release. I use it daily so want to have the least chance of issues and as little downtime as possiblle.

what do you use your 5500 for?

The SL-5500 will be starring in an Ebay auction shortly.

As for the syncing issue mentioned above I have had some successs - I now have my contacts synced, however the calendar entries are in the XML file on the C860, but not showing in the app.

I'm a bit confused.

I have a C860, and it suspends fine (OZ V3.5.1). The only problem is the usual one that if you shut it down (IE, doing a shutdown -h now, or halt, or from Settings->Shutdown, selecting Shutdown), it will not shutdown cleanly and require a battery pull. I'm still not quite sure of the reason behind this (I keep meaning to look to see if its just a PXA255 issue), but it seems to be common.

But if I use the power button on the back, or simply wait for it to suspend itself, or use the 'suspend' on the menu, it comes back on fine (apart from a small 4-6 second delay). I use the back powerbutton as well as the 'home' button to turn it on with no problems.

The problem I was having was it would come back from susepension for 10-15 seconds, then suspend again.  Is this what you are seeing ?

I get this if I use the on/off button on the back to suspend on my C750. The menu command works fine, and the on/off button on the back and the home key both work fine to resume.

Nope, everything works as I would assume. The only problem is if I resume it, and then rotate the screen whilst its in the 4-5 second hung state. Then unpredictable things occur.
Also, I'm positive the backlight can go brighter than 3.5.1 allows it.

Buglet. Add "echo 1 >/proc/power_key_off" to one of the initscripts and the problem is gone.

Great - that worked ! Suspend resume works fine !

Now all I need are apps that work ! I couldn't get Konqueror, Opera, Hancom stuff - symbol problem and missing dependencies.  Thank goodness for NAND backups - back to Cacko for now.

Opera, Hancom stuff - symbol problem

Need to use the compat libs. Use -force-depends to install, they work fine.

Konqueror

Works fine for me. I just installed it from the 3.5.1 feed.

Ah ! Your using the GPE rom (I thought that was broken) on an 5500.  I am trying to build on a C860.  What I want from my Z is a fully functional Linux box i.e.

Apache
Samba
Office fuctionality i.e. hancom apps
mysql
perl
gcc
php
vnc - server and client
rdesktop - for windows connectivity
PIM and finally
desktop synchronisation.

I currently have all this working under the Cacko rom on the C860 except vnc viewer.  I previously had all this working on the SL-5500 under OZ 3.2.  I would like to move to OZ because this is moving forward, where as Cacko and other Sharp based ROMS seem pretty static.  Plus I don't like multisync and prefer Qtopia Desktop.
Basically I want my cake and to eat it :-)
