NAND bounty for pxa255
« on: October 02, 2004, 11:54:47 pm »
I have utterly hosed my 5600. My last resort is to acquire a NAND backup from some other 5600 pxa255 user or send it to Sharp and pay them lots of money. I need to have this unit working as soon as possible and may be willing to pay someone for a NAND backup that will resurrect my 5600. It must be the pxa255 model, and preferably running OZ/Opie. Ideally it'd be nice to have these (NANDs)available in the downloads section for anyone else that may need the same...

If you're interested in providing me a NAND please contact me or reply here to negotiate terms (if applicable).

Unfortunatly the PXA255 is rare... Well, rarer than the PXA250.

I'd make a NAND backup for you, but for the fact that I've got the PXA250... Sorry. :/

Also remember, when making a NAND backup, the ENTIRE Zaurus data is copied... PIM data, apps, settings, etc.

I'd suggest once getting a NAND restore working, just re-flash and re-format it right away, though.

Yes, agreed. Once I do get the NAND I'd format right away. I'm desperate to get this working soon, so my offer for compensation still stands.

What's the harm in using a NAND from a PX250? Are they that different?

I've done some searching around, and the only differences between the px250 and 255, are that the 255 has a 200MHz memory bus as opposed to the 250's 100MHz. The other difference is in power consumption improvements on the 255.

Seems to me that if you have a px250 NAND, then you should be able to flash using that, at least until you can flash with a nand for the 255.

Well, they might be, and that's the issue. The NAND is the whole thing. If it messes up, you are 200% screwed, so why even take the chance?
Sorry. I just don't have the time...

stormer, you're a life-saver.

Because Offroadgeek has said that he'll put the file in the downloads section, you may want to create two backups. The first backup to maintain all of your current contact info, etc. After that format and then create the NAND backup for posting. That way the NAND backup is clean.

To create a NAND backup:

Hold down "d" and "m" while pressing reset (battery switch in Replace position). This brings up the Service menu. Use the direction pad to go right three times, this is Service menu 4/4. Menu item 2 is NAND Flash Backup. This will create a SYST5600.DBK file on your CF. Press Okay. File is shown on the screen.

To restore a NAND backup:
Same procedure as above, selecting menu item 3 instead of two.
Offroadgeek has said that he'd place the file into the downloads section, so you can contact him about how to do that. Or I can put up an FTP server later when I get home.

To get out of the Service menu, press the reset button and flip switch back to Normal Operation.

stormer saved the day, and my Zaurus. For now I have his two pxa255 5600 NAND backups. One is an Opie NAND the other a QPE NAND. Until we can post these to the downloads section, if anyone needs or would like a copy just let me know and I'll get the FTP server up for download availability.

Thanks again, stormer!

after reading this I became interested in looking at the service menu (ok I am a fiddler who cannot help it).

On my sl-5500 i pressed "d" and "m" and hit the reset. It simply did a reset, no service menu.

should this work on a sl-5500?

Don't think it works on the 5500... Only the 5600/6000/Cxx0s.

And you HOLD D and M down, while you hit the reset.
Sorry. I just don't have the time...
