making movies for the Zaurus

I want to be able to rip some DVDs onto my SD card so I can watch them on my Zaurus. What format works best on the Z? This is using the Qtopia v. 3.

MPEG-4 encoded DivX AVIs work great, just be sure to reduce the FPS to 15 and use the -framedrop option if using MPlayer (I highly recommend it, the previous things are for audio-video sync).

What resolution should I use under 15fps.....

Zaurus 5500- 3.5.2 64mb memory
XP- Qtopia 1.7

Kingston CF 512 RAM on FAT
DigitFilm SD 256 RAM on ext2
Panasonic SD 256 RAM <- can't manage to put ext2 in it :(

Targus universal keyboard <- Not working in 3.5.2
Symbol CF wifi <- worked, but have a bump on the back of the card :(
Intel CF wifi <- not working well :(

2 broken stylus...(bought another one in Japan but I broke that within 2 week after. = o o = )
(managed to glue it w/ krazy glue :)

Battery box <-DIY (Stuffs were bought in RadioShack)

320x240. The Zaurus has no problem with rendering things fullscreen, but remember that MPlayer writes directly to the framebuffer. This means that when it exits, it'll leave some artifacts on the screen, but they'll be cleared up when that part of the screen refreshes.

That's 5500 right....coz I wonder if it can handle 320X240 15fps
Since 5600 is w/ a 2X faster CPU...

BTW, strongARM CPU really a battery sucker......
It uses  3W of power compare to 1w of Xscale.....

Question on this topic...
Say I have a 10 minute VOB file I decrypted from a DVD
Has anyone used DVDshrink to get it just the right size for the Z?
I compressed it to the max, and got the file down to 212M so it would fit on my 256M SD card, and it doesn't play, it just clicks and then goes away...are there other steps I'm missing?

I want to watch Troops on my Z!

I've got a 5500, I'm running the latest TKC rom with the home on SD script (which ROCKS!), I just installed a compatible version of Opieplayer2, which allows me to use the XviD codec to compress things.  I've been toying around and I'm now running at 25fps full screen video, with stereo sound.  And the best part?  10 minutes of video is coming in right around 7, that's right 7 MB.  That means almost any movie will fit under 100 MB, most way under.  So if I spring for a 1GB CF card, I can prob cram it with about 15 movies.  Now who say's my Z is dead?  Let's see the IPaq'ers compete with this!

Wrong,  the 5600 is NOT twice as fast as the 5500, there is a bug in the 5600 xscale processor which makes it actually slower than the 5500. Also benchmarks run on the strongarm sa1100 and the xscale used in the 5600 show no benefit in speed and also NO demonstratable saving in power the xscale has over the strongarm. So the strongarm remains a extremely power saving cpu, in dissipates less than a watt at 200mhz

Well I shrunk down the video to 5fps, and 96khz mono sound and it still is slow.  Do I have to flash the ROM or can I just install a different video player or is the SD read too slow, or is the file too big.  The mpg is encoded at 192bps.  10 minutes ends up being about 20Meg.  Any hints about just what to install or how to encode the vids?

Ok, I'll bite (although I know I really shouldn't  )

10 minutes in around 7 MB, huh? That's an average of 96 kBit/s for video and audio. You're claiming 25 fps 'full screen' and of course 'stereo sound'. Ok. That is indeed possible -- but at what resolutions/sampling frequencies? I doubt that the resulting quality can be deemed acceptable. Xvid uses the MPEG-4 family of codecs, and given the parameters you specified, that just does not compute.
