5XXX support?
« on: December 21, 2003, 03:26:05 pm »
Just a question - are there any plans for 5000/5500 support for the X11 ROM?

TIA,

Jeremy.

Probably not, the screen is too small.

Well, for the same reasons you\'d run it on your c7**/c8** models - access to the X11 applications.

But if the smaller screen size outweighs it, that\'s a shame.

short answer, I\'ve usedX11 on a 5500 and there is no way around it.  It is completely and totaly unusable and lacks all the coolness of using it on the c series.  I know a few people have used it successfuly with a small selection of apps, but it basicaly sucks big stinky ass.

Not true, I\'d like to ;-)

I disagree with your first point, it is usable, but as you say you need to choose your apps. I admit it\'s probably not as cool as on the c7xx machines. However there are useful things to do with it.

In any case it ought to be possible to install the packages etc. on the 5500 (OZ or Sharp ROM) and run them through Qtopia-X, etc. When I have some time I\'ll try these things out and see whether they can be made to work.

perhaps a pannable main screen.... set the res to 640x480 and let them scroll/pan.

If you\'re patient... we have plans to integrate cooperative (i.e. having it play nice with Opie and other GUIs) X11 support into OpenZaurus NG (that is OpenEmbedded/Zaurus). Then again, if you\'re not patient - help us

ARGH!!!  You tempt us!

X11 is working on opie compat (?) ... and OZ is working on X11 compat.  So then it will
come down to other components of the OS.

Could someone give a side by side comparison of the ROMs so people who might not be familiar with Linux can make an informed decision.  Ya, people just want to use something that just works, but like for me, I want to code python with qt3 (not qt2) .. and I want to compile.

Is there a wiki page somewhere where we can get this going?  All these different forums are starting to bite...  due to the duplication... and you never know what\'s the latest on anything.

What Mickeyl is talking about is quite nice, using virtual terminals so you can have both OPIE and X11 running alongside one another (as in they both think they have full and free access to the screen), then just switch between with some random keypress. This is already working on the c7xx models I believe.

I got this link http://sgp.zaurii.net/howtos/

But the forums it points to have been down for some time.

Anyone got some other links. Got close but no cigar...

That\'s my web page. The forum links are not strictly necessary, they just point to the threads in the old zauruszone forum in which we worked out how to get this all working. That page you\'ve linnked contains all the info you need to get X running within Qtopia to be viewed with a VNC client (such as keypebble). It works nicely, but I thought it might be nice to have a complete X11 ROM.

That said, it\'s not related to this virtual terminal thing. For that try doing a search on the devnet. There\'s just a comment from Mickeyl that he has it working, not much else.

Simon,

What apps have you managed to get running ?

Tried a couple and just got dependance problems.

Love some more detailed info on getting all this working until I can get pim, sync etc. under x11 rom.

Also, I\'m sure I read somewhere you could actually kill the qtopia session and sun x without. Was not explained properly or anything, just said it could be done.
