Current State of 6000L Support
« on: October 16, 2004, 02:53:11 pm »
Amazon has the 6000L at a great price, which I know is a great deal.

Amazon 6000L link.  Please click here as this is routed through ZUG for affiliate dollars.

The only question I have is "what is the state of support from developers and ROM makers for 6000L"?

I have heard lots of complaints about how the 6000L doesn't play alot of 5x00 software (niether does the Cx00, but to a MUCH lesser extent and ussually not anything I care about much).

I have also heard that the ROM choices are very limited.  Is this going to change?

I'd like to hear from everyone; owners of 6000L and the people working on PDAXROM, Cakco QT, and OZ as well as developers in gerneral.....

What's your feeling about the 6000L?  I know the Hardware is great but bulky....what I want to know about is the ROMS and compatibility issues now and what is expected in the (near) future.

The price at Amazon is great, but not if development  and support from the powers that be (NOT talking about Sharp of course )  is not here or forthcoming soon.

Thanks.

I have pretty much gotten everything I haver ever tried to work on mine.   Though there is sometimes tweaking involved.    what exactly are you trying to see if it will work on the 6000?

As far as alternate roms, there are none that I am aware of although supposedly open zaurus and pdaxrom are working on them.

Nothing in particular...Just trying to decide if I want one with...which depnds on level of support (ROMS and compatible existing software).

So you're saying most software fo the 5500 series worked for you ??

What kind of Tweaking are your refering to.....Linux, or GUI changes?

mostly linux, also sometimes I have needed to change the .desktop files.

Some of the apps are ony 320X240 and those take a while to change the screen size when you load them. Don't know how to fix that.

Don't know anything about messing with the GUI so I guess that I really haven't had to.

kismet
wellenreiter
nmap
gaim
vnc
tree explorer qt
mileage calculator
zbedic
tempconv
kino2
opie reader
dr z video
qpdf2

really need to clean some of this crap out..

Most of these are on the sd card.

Have also been able to set up qtopia desktop over  wireless instead of usb through the cradle.

If there is anything in particular you want me to try I will because I love new software.

How about NES Emulator, QPE Alarm Clock,  FreeNote,  portabase, Doom2 (prboom) ?

How is the Sync with Windows and Linux?

Are the PDA apps any more polished than the C860 version?

What if anything, did you fin never worked well for you?

Like for example, I have never been able to get Kismet to work properly on my C860, but it worked fine on my 5500...(anyone care to help me with that...a C860 specific URL for Kismet?)

Also, is it true the 6000 only has 64MB (as opposed to C860 128MB of memory) and that the memory is not Flash.  If so, what happens when the battery dies, do you have to reinstall anything or do you lose data....I know it has backup battery, but that probably own't last a month in the drwaer with a dead battery.  (I know it has flash and non flash, but not sure how this is broken down).

Also the bus speed of a C860 is 200Mhz...Is the Bus speed the same on the 6000L or is it only 100mhz?

Thanks.

I have th QPE alarm clock working on my 6K.  Only oddity with it is that the alarm seems to only work when  the "Display with magnified screen" ckeckbox is empty.

I was able to install prboom and get it to start, but I never got any of the controls to work... would get sound and display but then it wouldn't react to any keys, and I had to do a reset to get out of it.  I'm still trying to get it to work though.  I have also installed znester, but haven't tried it out on any games (I still don't have any CF or SD storage so I'm just going off system flash.

As for the memory, I think the 6k has 64mg NAND so battery loss doesn't matter.  But thats just my understanding of it.  I'm kinda new to the Z scene and am still learning.

I do have Kismet working fine.  I followed the steps in the How-To section.  There are steps specific to the sl-6000... mabye that would work for your c860??

I use stupkid's feed at http://www.bryandeluca.com/feed for ipks and haven't had trouble with any of them so far.  Thanks stupkid!

I can sync to Outlook 2003, but I usually use qtopiadesktop.

Ihave prboom running fine on my 6000 with ultimate doom wad and the midi background music with timidity. Took a while to get the controls mapped to my liking.

These are the files I used to get prboom working.
libSDL_1.2.6-zports-5_arm
libSDL-net_1.2.5cvs-1_arm
lib SDL-mixer_1.2.5cvs-1_arm
prboom_2.2.3-2_arm

Installed znester the other day to try it out. The 3 or 4 NES ROMS which I tried worked.

Just tried portabase and freeenote qt and they both  work.  Although I don't know how to use them worth a damn.

You don't lose data or programs if batteries die and it is 64mb.

Windows synch works fine.   I only sync with qtopia desktop for the pim stuff.

Where can I find the nes emulator you refer to, that sounds like it might be a challenge that I would like to try.

I have a 6000L and a 6000W and am in the same boat when it comes to support.  I don't see a whole lot available right now, but I expect the ROMs to start working within the next couple months.  I will probably get involved in ROM development and application porting once I get a chance to build a development environment.  In short, don't worry about it; especially since the 6000's are now available cheap, more folks will start picking them up and hacking.
6000L, 6000W from Japan
Lexar 512 and 1024mb SDs
Seagate 5gb CF microdrives

It runs, but it is not right

For example if I type snes9x -xs 640 -ys 480 rom.zip

It looks correct except it is in landscape and if you are holding the sl-6000 that way it takes only the top left corner of the screen.

Perhaps I don't have the right libsdl for the 6000, don't know

Also left is right and right is left on the keypad.

if I type snes9x -xs 480 -ys 640 rom.zip it is displayed portrait but all messed up looking

Any ideas anyone??

SNES wasa little tougher.

Created do.sh file and put it in /mnt/card/snes (execute privand own by root)

Contents:
snes9x -hi -x2 -xs 640 -ys 480 <ROM.ZIP (with no_path, since ROMS are in same dir as do.sh) >

This is for a C860, but shoudl work with 6000L when swapping the 640 and 480

Note, I then jsu added an Icon (in System->TabSettings under games) and gave it a icon and the program name was simply do.sh (no path).
