USB Adaptor & Cables

Finally got a 6000L today, but very confused about the usb host port.
Firstly, the mini-B connector on the back of the docking station (the one sharp gives you a cable for)- is that for usb host or slave?
Now, just what type is the port on the Z? Loads of ppl say it's a mini-A, and I've got several mini-B cables, none of which fit, but the port is for OTG (On The Go) USB connections and should, according to the spec, take mini-A and mini-B connectors, which will decide whether it is a host or slave. So why don't my mini-B connectors fit (not that it is much use to me as a slave port)?

Does anybody know where I can get a suitable cable for a reasonable price in the UK?
Iriver won't sell/ship outside US/Canada.
I am also interested in a [insert zaurus port type here] to mini-B cable- anyone know where I can get one?

Thanks
Simon

I found a Mini Type A Male -> Type B Male on www.lindy.com, ordered, recieved today and checked. Works.
...

Here is the link:
http://www.lindy.com/chit/productfolder/03/31627/index.php
And the pictures:
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=64382\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

Thanks for the link!  This place sells other, similar cables as well, and has worldwide offices.  I ordered two cables (mini-A->B, mini-A->mini-B - covers most USB devices w/o attached cables) and got them 3 days later (US).  iRiver is currently out of stock; claims it will remain so until July..  Also, not in your post:  the cables I ordered are 0.5M and very flexible, so they are pretty compact.

i think he is talking about the MINI A usb Connector on the 6000, you need a Mini A to standard USB cable.
[div align=\"right\"][a href=\"index.php?act=findpost&pid=19846\"][{POST_SNAPBACK}][/a][/div]

What is the correct name of a standard USB plug? Is it "A" or "B"?

"A" I believe.  the boxy things with the cut corners are "b"   the little ones that conect to your card reader (for example) are mini-b

Has any of you guys have any luck with USB 2.0 flash drives?
I picked up one of these     little beautys (only $60 for the 1GB version at Sam's).
They are quite small with the retractable connector feature, and you can't beat the price.

Except that I can't get them to work with the Z.  Hotplug doesn't even recognize when its plugged in!   The docs says that it does support Linux w/ 2.4 kernel, and I can mount it without problems with my Compaq Presario running Slackware 9.1.

Perhaps it is an issue with the USB 2.0 interface?

Have you tried mounting it manually ?

mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usbstorage

where usbtoarge is a existing folder under /mnt

it should normally work at USB 1.1 speed.

Well, there is no device to mount.  Hotplug does not recognize that the drive was plugged in.

Is usb-storage module loaded? If not try loading it manually that should force the kernel to see the drive.

Also this might be a silly question but are you using a USB host cable (mini-A) to connect the USB flash drive? It won't be recognised if you are using the black usb min-b cable that came with the zaurus.

P.S. iRiver Japan has the iRiver USB host cables for 520 yen (http://www.iriver.co.jp/estore/details.php?3,9,118) for those of you in the Land of the Rising Sun who were wondering where to get a mini-A usb cable from. I walked into an iRiver store and picked one up right away

I found a much cheaper and current alternative.  It's very similar to the iRiver.
Check it out here: Vernier

Thanks for the link to Venier.    Since I think I also located a  possible adapter kit with mini-A 5-pin female I thought I'd share it, although the Vernier $5 plus shipping looks pretty good.

I found the following possibility (also available in 6 foot length?) which looks interesting:

 Retrak / Emerge 3-Ft Usb 2.0 Cable
   Kit - ETCABLEKIT3

   ETCABLEKIT3 - 3' USB 2.0 Universal
   Cable Kit - Includes 2-USB 2.0 Cables
   (3' and bonus 18" cable), 9
   interchangable adapters allow for
   easy configuration of multiple cable
types. Configure as USB A, B,
   Male/Female, Mini A 4-pin, Mini A
   5-Pin, Mini B.   4-PIN, MINI A 5-PIN,

One source is http://www.nextdaypc.com/main/products/det...ainid=ND0130014

Another cheaper source for the adapter is http://www.audio-video-furniture.com/Commo...=294659#Details

Has anyone had any experience with this adapter kit?  The picture isn't clear enough for me to tell if it will be right.

Thanks,
sdjf
