Dual boot with another ROM?
« on: November 03, 2004, 12:19:19 pm »
I just ordered a Lexar 1GB SD card from newegg.com, and with the extra storage I'd really like to dual boot pdaxrom, and maybe cacko or another ROM as well.  I remember a thread about this a while back, but so much has changed with pdaxrom I don't know if it would be relevant or not.

Has anyone done this with RC5?

I am also extremely interested in this and have pursued all the threads I am sure you already have seen, particularly these:
https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...topic=1510&st=0
https://www.oesf.org/forums/inde...ual%20boot&st=0
Both of these threads refer to attachments which, much to my and other users frustration, are no longer there.  Supposedly derekp, joshp, stubear all have this working and have written scripts and refer to tarballs and alternative kernels to facilitate dual booting for the rest of us, stubear specifically with pdaXrom.  I have tried to contact these users directly (yeah, kinda pushy, sorry, but I really wanted those scripts!) and haven't gotten anything yet, except from joshp who says he does not think he can help me (I have a c860 and he doesn't).  I am ready to work with others to reinvent the wheel and redo these scripts and finish it all off by documenting it for ZUG, but would really love the leg up from those who have already have sucess.  It would be great to be able to install new "test" roms to sd or cf  and keep my primary rom pristine.
Thanks!

Although the pivot_root scripts seem to work - if you want to do it the right way, you need to enhance the Zaurus bootloader to support booting ROMs from CF or via Network.

I dual boot with the sharp rom on flash and pdaX on SD card - actually I've stopped working on it cause it takes too long to reboot

So now I'm looking at getting pdaX to use X/qt - that way I can still have Japanese input and use X apps at the same time. And I don't have to wait 3 minutes while the Z reboots when I want to use an X app.

I still have the scripts I wrote, if any one wants them let mew know as I don't have anywhere to host them.

I would like to see your scripts.  And I never thought of the dual boot setup as some thing you would use whan you just want to run an x program.  I have always used it more or less to check out new and diffirnt roms with out bricking my Z.

Yes, Stubear, I would be very interested in your scripts.  I, like Joshp, am interested in being able to test new roms before commiting them to internal flash.  I did some googling today on the subject and found a couple things, although I have had little time to try them out.  In fact, this looks kinda like what you were refering to in your thread, mentioned above:
http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/dual-boot-760-xrom/
Also, these links should help, but, again, I have barely had time to paruse them, let alone vouch for them.
Follow this thread, it seems there were a couple syntax errors which need to be fixed in the originally proposed script:
http://www.handhelds.org/hypermail/oe/19/1914.html
These are two pages on how to boot OZ from the sd card, which is also part of the process and can be useful, I am sure.
http://openembedded.org/oe_wiki/index.php/...ot%20filesystem
http://www.openzaurus.org/oz_website/faq/faq?id=192
I hope that none of this ened up as misinformation since I have not been able to apply it in any fashion (a man has to work) but I'll report back with what I can glean from them and my experiences.  Hope you can do the same!
Happy hacking!!

http://zaurus.spy.org/feeds/dual-boot-760-xrom/ contains the original scripts and the tarball of the pdaXrom (including changed fbdev) taken from my SD card.

The Dual_C760.zip has the init and init.card scripts need to dual boot, but lacks the readme telling how to set up things so thay work, I'll post them when I get home.

Sorry for the delay in posting this.

Here is the original Dual_C760.zip file that I created (includes a ReadMe and the gtar ipk - gtar is necessary for unpacking the tarballs I made of pdax and cacko as tar on the Z doesn't support the -p flag.)

Here is the ReadMe for those interested

Dual boot scripts for C760.

Currently I've only been able to get pdaXrom-1.0 to properly dual boot from a Sh
arp Qtopia rom.

While I'm in the testing stage a lot of things need to be done manually.
Here are the steps to get pdaXrom booting from SD on Qtopia roms (Success with S
tandard Sharp Rom and Cacko 1.21 rom)

1. Download pdaXrom tarball from http://zaurus.hostnic.us (Special thanks to Cor
ey Costadura for supplying storage space)
2. remount / read-write (mount -o rw,remount /
3. mkdir /sbin/sys
4. cp /sbin/telinit /sbin/sys/init - this is necessary as telinit doesn't like b
eing called from /sbin/sys/init and gave errors
5. cp init script to /sbin
6. chmod +x /sbin/init
7. untar pdaX tarball to ext2 formatted card (tar xzpvf pdax-SD.tar.gz) NOTE: yo
u need a version of tar that understands the "p" flag to preserve permissions. I
use gtar on the zaurus rather than busybox tar.
8. reboot, while the SD card is in you should boot to pdaX, remove the card and
boot into normal rom.

There is a slight chance you can turn your Zaurus into a brick following these i
nstructions, I can accept no responsibility if that happens. These instructinos
work for me- YMMV.

If you have any questions/comments regarding these scripts contact me on stubear
{at}bouyer.no-ip.org or on the www.zaurususergroup.com forums.

I poked around at this but I have to admit, as soon as I tried pdaXrom and then went back to cacko, I lost all intrest.  I am solidly a pdaXrom user.  But I wanted to add one more link to anyone else following this thread:

I hve a couple questions.

1. All programs you install in pdax stay on the SD and not in the Z memory, right?

2. And how does one format an SD card to ext3 on the Z?

3. Where do you find gtar?

Thanks all!

(Yes I searched for the answers. These are the questions I could not find.)

1.  Yes, ram is like ram and SD/ internal flash is like a hard disk in a desktop pc

2 see on the ZUG howto section only where you find mkfs.ext2 read mkfs.ext3.
Take also a look at this thread

3 the tar utility that come with pdaxrom is the GNU tar program, if it is what you are looking for

Stu, are you getting anywhere with this?

I sure wish we could somehow have the best of both worlds. I still use Cacko ROM because I like my Sharp ROM functionality (app, syncronization, etc.), but hate that I miss out on all of the pdaXrom applications.

Some will run in X/qt, but not all.

I sure wish we could have one ROM that would do it all. Oh well.
