640x480 On 4"?

For those who have a 5x00 & a 6000 (or even a C-series), I'm confused and have a question.  Although the resolution sounds great and the desktops that people are showing on the forum look terrific, it's still only a 4" screen so are the letters still about the same size?  When you run Konsole,  don't you have about the same number of characters across the screen?  I'd think that if you managed to get 60 or 80 chars then the font would be too small to read?  I'm on the fence about getting one and trying to justify the jump from a 5600.

I can read the fonts on my terminal without a problem. Get a c-860! ;-)

Honestly, I went from a 5600 to a c860 and I couldn't be happier.

The keyboard is so much easier to use.  Then screen is a lot easier to read, and I love the clamshell style.

Definately go for it.

The screen on the 6000 looks just fine, I can see the fonts on the terminal fairly easy.  Although my doctor says that someday my eyes will start to get worse with age and they will degrade down to 20/20.     I just can't see going back to 240X320 again!

Tehas you have a completely justified question.  It actually befuddled me before I saw one in person.  The screen is not greatly larger than your 5600 physically, but the RESOLUTION is four times as great.  Now as you have already forseen it makes the letters much smaller by default and in a Hancom Word for example you can fit four times as much text on the screen as with your 5x00.  You would think that would be so tiny it would be unreadable but it doesn't work like that.  Thanks to the incredible screen technology that Sharp uses on both the C760/860 and the 6000 it's EASILY readable.  The letters are razor sharp and very defined, if your eyesight is less than 20/20 you might wish to make them a bit larger which is very easy as they have incorporated a "zoom" feature that allows you to zoom in and out varying amounts on just about any program.
The 6000L's screen is about 8% physically larger than the c860 even though both have the same resolution so as the folks posting before me have pointed out that it is easy to read the smaller text on the c860, you can understand why it's even easier to read on the 6000.
You can surf the web and most pages are readable just fine without zooming in at all.  As a matter of fact, once you have browsed the web on a VGA screen you will feel like you're holding a toy when you pick up your 5x00!  Did I mention that you can browse most sites without panning or zooming out? Well, I should have...you're clunky sliders and stylus dragging all over the screen days will be over.  The other thing you'll enjoy is that the resolution is high enough that web pages are formatted and displayed JUST like your desktop instead of being all disjointed and befunked when you used Opera's zoom or font resizing feature on the 5x00.
There is just no comparing the visual difference between 320x240 and 640x480 adequately on paper.  Don't fret regardless of which Sharp VGA model you get you will be nothing less than 110% pleased.  In hindsight if the 6000L had NO OTHER improvement over the 5x00 series I would have upgraded to it just for the VGA screen alone.

I have to concur with these opinions - the sharpness and clarity of the SL-6000 screen makes text quite readable, even at very small sizes.  I was originally worried just like you are, but I have no regrets.  I occasionally have a small problem that is probably made worse by the small 640x480 text:  sometimes I miss while trying to tap a URL in Opera.  I just curse and try again

I have also noticed that missing links in opera is the only disadvantage to the hi res screen,  but the only time i swear is trying to hit the next page link numbers on ZUG!!! those things are TINY!!!

ps,  since, as you say, you don't ever really have to pan around a browser window, i leave my stylus in the "highlight" mode instead of the "pan" mode, then if i CAN'T hit a tiny link, i can at least highlight it and hit OK

I always edit the Opera config file so that left & right do "Last Link"/"Next Link", then I don't have to use the stylus to select links at all.....

And BTW did you find a way to use a proxy in opera if the network connection isn't configured to use a proxy? There're settings fields, but looks like they're not working

You edit the file
/home/zaurus/.opera/opera.ini

In the [Shortcuts] section, if you modify the lines that define
Scroll line left=LEFT
Scroll line right=RIGHT

to read:

Scroll line left=A
Scroll line right=Q

(or anything really, just so LEFT and RIGHT are no longer bound to the scroll operation).

You can the add the lines:
Highlight next URL=RIGHT
Highlight previous URL=LEFT
